Some of my middle school students are getting a bit bored with the text and have indicated to parents who have indicated to the school that they want to spend more time free-talking about things they're interested in. I've no problem with that, I like the free-talking a lot more since they tend to participate more, I just don't know squat about about Korean culture beyond some food items. So, I was hoping you fine folks could chip in on some ideas that might interest lower-range middle school students, age 12 to 14. Apparently they mentioned sports, music, and movies, but that's pretty broad. Any help is appreciated.

On the music and films note, my middle school girls are crazy about Boa, the Trax, and good ol Harry Potter. Thinking about sport, football/soccer is the obvious thing. I'm planning some world cup themes over the next few months (i'm even gonna make yellow and red cards for discipline!)

Perhaps your own lack of information in these areas can be your discussion. Let them tell you about Korean culture. Food, music, movies, arts, current events, school life...

For your part, read the Korean papers in English, online editions, surf the Korean net....even if you don't speak Korean, there are many pictures that can spark a conversation.

Favorite recipies, write new lyrics for your favorite pop song, translate song lyrics...all things that you could turn the tables on them with. Get them to teach you what they know about and are interested in through English.

over to my survey thread for foreigners. You won't find the kids faves like Dongbangshingi, Buzz and SS501, but you will get some ideas. I started using this info with a couple of classes today, and they were freaking fascinated by the choices of Jonnie Waygook.
