Hello gentle people.
I read somewhere several months ago while looking for something else that it was illegal for E-2 teachers to receive cash gifts, as it was tantamount to receiving monies for teaching. Goods gifts apparently were fine. I did follow the logic, however twisted, and I think it was on an official K-gov website.
I cant imagine that it would really be illegal, but then again.....welcome to Korea. Does anyone konw for sure what the law is regarding that? |

Same here.
If this is a new trend in the public school system, I am all for it.
As for the OP, if you're a teacher in a public school, it's very illegal for you to except any sort of cash gift from the parents, be you hangukin or waegukin. They had a big problem with it in the past, parents bribing their children's teachers into giving them higher grades, better attention, etc. So they've come down pretty hard by Korean standards on that sort of stuff. |

Whats the word?촌 지?(sp)
Not so much a bribe as a token of appreciation...and bear in mind if its not given it will not be appreciated.Personally, just a card would be a nice surprise.
At a hagwon a while back I got a lotte dept.store 50.000 voucher that I was pretty stoked about.Took my gf to the restaurant there for kalbi kui and she told me how she made off with an envelope of dosh when she was 12 or so from her mothers piano hagwon that was handed to her as her mother was away.100.000 15 years ago would have been a sweet score.
Is Monday a holiday for all Kyonggi public school teachers? |

JacktheCat is right. It was (and still is) a problem here.
If you've noticed, it is quite common for Korean teachers to ignore particular students. Flat-out ignore. As in make no effort whatsoever to teach a kid. As a result, it was customary for parents to pay extra for teachers to actually try to teach a kid. It was not at all uncommon for teachers to drop hints, or just outright say what they wanted.
As recently as 1995 it was common for teachers to go home on Teachers Day with a trunk full of goodies. I have heard it said that many teachers doubled their income by asking for gifts.
It is now illegal for teachers to ask for gifts and for parents to pay off the teachers. So is beating the students. Both still happen, and fairly openly.
BTW, I wasn't talking about a plastic container of kimchi, either. I was talking about TVs and microwave ovens.
Things like flowers are acceptable. A small box of candy or whatever. If you are aiming for the big stuff, you might want to spend a couple of lessons this week on "I wish I had...", so the kids understand what it is you want from their parents. Encourage them to get their parents organized into gift-giving groups. |

Wine,woman and song....
A student told of others being ostracised for lack of a teachers day gift, with the teacher demanding to know where it was and where they got off coming to class without one.
Private schools gifts are fine, public schools the concept is odious. |
