I wanted to know if my hagwon is offering us what is standard.
Rent-free studio, 1.9-2.0million won (no ex/experience), 18,000-20,000 OT, teaching hours MWF 1:30pm-9pm, TTH 2:30pm-9pm (must be in at 12:30pm every day for HW/test corrections and meetings), 50/50 health, 5 vacation days incorporated with korean holidays (can not choose vacation days they are placed when there is a holiday or say 2 holidays within a certain time), no need to prepare lesson plans (just follow teacher's guides), the director is a nice guy who takes our opinions into consideration, 4 kids per class, 1hr 10minutes classes, a 30 minute break around 6pm. That is all that I can recall at the moment, if I am forgetting an important part of contract, please tell me. I just wanted to know if for the hours and wage if our school is at or below average. Thanks |

Apart from the very pathetic amount of vacation time offered it seems like quite a good gig. |

It doesn't sound terrible, but being there from 12:30-9PM seems a little long. Basically you can't do anything during the week, unless you want to wake up at 6AM everyday.
I would want minimum 2 million to take a job though.
1 hour and 10 minute classes can be hellish when you have a class that doesn't speak, but they are great when you have a good class. |

For a newbie it is a little low...the standard is:
2.0-2.1 million + 20k / 40-45 minute class for overtime....
10 working days vacation (2 x 5-day blocks or your choice with notice)
ALL red days off and credit given for classes not worked on those days.
50/50 National health insurance (not them pay 1/2 of your medical costs cause you get screwed otherwise).
Rent free housing (usually one room / studio).
(let me confirm the math here 7 contact class hours per day 1:30 - 9:30 with 30 minute break mwf and 6 class hours t,th ?? 33 hours of full contact per week..... + 60 minutes of prep time before class each day?
(normal is 30 classes of 50 minutes per week [120 classes of 50 minutes per month])
-Long days, long classes, very low pay for the required contact time, and short vacation, not a good deal. Based on your minimal information I would say you are getting f**ked here..
Keep looking....
P.S.
-4 kids per class... makes me wonder if the school is financially viable for the long term. If he has less than 5 full time employees, then he can refuse to pay your severance (cause he is exempt under labor laws) and nothing you can do about it. |

according to my calculations the guys work about 38 hours a week. i am not sure, but is anything over 30 hours a week considered overtime? the class times vary a little, but normally its 24 hours total for MWF (6 classes)and 14hrs total for TTH (5 classes) which adds to 38. i am "head teacher" so i normally work about 3hrs more per week and make only 300,000 won more a month. he has paid severance to another teaching who is leaving next month and my severance is due at the end of this month as well as my regular pay tomorrow. he has asked me to stay another year and "promised" to increase my pay by 1.0mil from the 2.0mil i got when i started making 3.0mil. we have over 100 students not including the chinese classes and sat/sun classes that he and sometimes I and another teacher teach on sat for about 2hrs. |

In my humble opinion, these are the BARE MINIMUM conditions a newbie should be looking for and insisting on at a kiddie hogwon:
2.0 million for 120 teaching hours/mo
free non-shared apartment
roundtrip airfare from and to the nearest international airport to your home
block shift (no more than 8 hours between your daily start and finish time, get that in writing)
health insurance, 50% of premium paid by you, 50% by employer
Monday-Friday schedule, NO SATURDAYS
2 weeks vacation
all national holidays off (no need to make them up)
any overtime is optional, paid at the rate of 120% of your standard hourly pay
It's my humble opinion, but I haven't heard any major disagreements. If anything, a lot of people say I am setting the bar too low (low salary, too much contact time).
Your job does not my bare minimum standards for vacation time, salary (maybe, 1.9-2.0) and lack of weekend classes.
If you're asking if I would recommend those conditions to a newbie, I'd say no.
If you're asking if I think you can do better, I'd say yes, unless you're particularly happy there for some reason you aren't mentioning. |

In your OP (original post) you asked if the offering was standard... IT IS NOT!!!!
Based on your first post... and it is NOT the same as your second one...
AND you say you are the "HEAD TEACHER" in one breath and in another you ask

As the head teacher it makes me wonder... YOU DON"T KNOW?? Strange...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOTH are CRAP for a newbie... long hours, long classes, low pay, low overtime rate, WEEKEND work and crappy holidays... I wouldn't even consider it....
AND I would advise anyone who asked about a job like that... LOOK ELSEWHERE... It is a CRAP offer (and I am being polite here). |

The law has changed and the 5 employee rule no longer applies. The Labor Law now applies to everyone regardless of the number of employees at your place of employment. |

is this real? Never have heard that this is standard. Most of the teachers I know are only able to take 1 or 2 days plus the weekend but they have other non-korean teachers to coverr their classes.
I have 10 days vacation in my contract but my boss said I couldn't take off consecutive days because therre would be no one to teach my classes. He has also counted sick days off of vacation even when I went to the doctor! sick days aren't in the contract so I decided not to fight with him on this.
My contract is up soon. Can I make him let me have the unused vacation days to leave early? |
