My school is giving us the best present, a day off!

Why do you think that is? There is a very clear understanding at my public school that we are off to avoid the preying parents. Past experience has proven that it is better to not be a stationary target to the "favors".

Which, conversely, is exactly why my old private school was always open...

Oh, in case you were wondering, yes, I got loaded at the private school(largest single gift from a parent was 500,000 in cash), and it was seen as impolitic to return or refuse. I compromised by spending all the money on school supplies and books and a couple of class trips, funds for which were rarely forthcoming from the school.

The cognac I felt I deserved.

Yes but in the end, chances are they are spending money on something I don't really want or need (unless it was a gift voucher). My students are poor, so I would get the lavish gifts, and a day off from school is always good.

Time = money!

I worked in a predominantly Arab school in Sydney one year. The Christmas after 9/11 I received a plate with a photo of the burning twin towers on it.
OMG!
That gift went straight to the pool room!

At my school for the past 2 years, the Korean teachers usually cleaned house on Teacher's Day. They got many nice bottles of perfume, clinique gift sets, etc. The foreign teachers got WAY less. One Korean teacher got a nice watch and a nice necklace, while those same two kids gave their foreign teacher body wash/body lotion...and it was not a name brand either-_-

Hmmm...perhaps the confrontationary leanings of the board last week are influencing things, but your but seems to suggest we disagreed on something, but I don't think we did nor that your message is a response to mine.

Am I nuts?

My district decidedly suddenly to keep all elementary & middle schools (& some high schools) closed next monday. First time I've seen that. Some kind of injunction must have come down from on high.

Damn, I'd told the kids I was expecting cash -- lots of it.

There was an article about this. Many schools will be closed for that day in order to avoid this teacher day issues. But it is left up to the discrection of the principal to decide whether his/her school will be closed for the day.

364 days a year the prevailing attitude on this board is: Where is the money and how can I get my hands on it? It's kind of entertaining to see, once a year, a higher value system in play. Not that I believe it is sincere. But it is nice to see the charade.

Money is good! Grades for money? Well, if I have to give a passing grade to a PE student (who has NEVER attended a class) for FREE, why shouldn't I take some cash for upping a grade of a student who DID come to class???

THIS IS A JOKE!!!

So, did you give your students a gift for children's day? What did you give them? Does anyone here think it's better to give ... ?

For childrens day, every student had the opportunity to eat and drink junk until the got sick. They got to abuse the teacher in ways that they could never get away with in public school (I arm wrestled with every student at least three times i think. For some reason they just never got tired of being flung over the table).
