First, I don't think I would actually take anyone's advice on the subject (no offense), I'm just curious what people think about it. Recently ended a long relationship that at one point seemed like was going places.

Second, let's just skip over the givens like honesty, openness, trust and all that other crap Wink So, do you feel there are certain things that these kinds of relationships call for more than other relationships? More patience? More sacrifice? More of one person being able to turn their back on their family?

I wonder if part of the reason my relationship failed was that I'm not really ga-ga over Korea. She was willing to move to Canada, but still. Certainly the fact that I am mostly humoured by her country had a negative effect. Is it important that the foreigner really dig Korea for these relationships to work?

Most of the time I am of the mind that they are more or less like every other relationship, but somtimes wonder if they take more ... something.

Personally, I think the things that are MOST important in an intercultural relationship are:

1st ) PATIENCE
2nd) Communication and PATIENCE
3rd) respect for both partners cultures (even the STUPID bits) and PATIENCE
4th) all the other usual stuff like honesty, openness, trust and PATIENCE.

From your post it looks like you messed up with #3.

(And taking a second to hijack this post - does anyone have any newborn baby stuff they want to part with?? PM me if you do... thanks)

I would not say you need to "dig" Korea. Rather a person at the minimum respect the others culture and adaot to it to some degree (this goes both ways mind you).

Respect of each others culture is the key here. You need to do it, and so does your spouse. It cannot work otherwise. This also means compromises on both sides.

Whats important in a mixed relationship vs a non-mixed relationship?

I don't see that many differences and I think the basic requirements for a successful relationship in either case are the same.

Yup.

Never understood the "cultural differences" thing as a problem.

Cultural differences are a plus. Have you seen the MySpace thread in the offtopic forum? Im happy my wife has nothing to do with that culture.
