|

I will be in a position to commence teaching January 1, 2007. By then, I will have my TESL Certificate, plus an MBA, behind me. Questions:
1. When would institutions be in a position to offer contracts via this date?
2. What steps should I be taking now, or when, to secure employment, and with whom?
Steering me in the correct direction would be much appreciated. |

Institutes are constantly hiring. And by 'constantly' I mean 'all the freaking time'. The only hiring season you would need to worry about is for middle and high schools and universities.
It's also much too early for you to even be of interest to recruiters. Koreans normally leave things to the last minute including major hiring decisions, including major hiring decisions which they know six months in advance exactly when they will have to make. |

by september and october the colleges and universities will be hiring for next March (new semester).
if you want to teach hungover and lazy undergrads then your best bet is to apply this fall for next spring.
same applies to public schools.
january is winter vacation time (from end of december until february at public schools) so you could come over and work a WINTER CAMP, then take a couple of weeks off before the new semester at a job you secured beforehand or... take a winter camp and use the funds to look for a job while here... highly recommended... to be able to meet the teachers and director, see the school and apartment, is very valuable to ensuring one avoids a horror story.
hagwons hire all the time, if you go this route i recommend you do the winter camp idea and then find a position after you're already here (there's NO way you won't be able to)
but with your master's, if you go the hagwon route, you could get 2.5+ mill a month, especially at the prep schools for high school students, more than most university and public positions.
good luck whatever |

ok. This is based on my experience, but schools don't tend to hire very far in advance. Maybe only a few weeks. Stretching to a few months for the varisties. |

Seriously. My school has known for months it would have to replace two teachers leaving this month. They now have two weeks left and haven't hired anybody.
Sometimes, it really just blows your mind. |

Anything more than 6 months in advance is too early to fix up a job.
My recommendation is just to keep track of the daily postings of all the jobs here and follow the ones you like the sound of - just like tracking the stock market. |
