Six North Koreans granted refugee status in the United States last week could be the first of many more to arrive on American shores, a lawmaker said Wednesday.

"This is, I hope, just the beginning," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., who spoke by telephone Wednesday with some of the refugees. "In a few years, or even less, you will find these six free refugees leading free and productive lives in the United States."

It was the first time since the end of the Korean War a half century ago that the United States has admitted North Koreans as refugees. A 2004 law makes it easier for North Koreans to apply for such status.

The group includes four women who say they were victims of sexual slavery or forced marriages. Others claim they spent time in the communist regime's prison camps, Brownback said.

However, they're refusing to say which country they were accepted from, which I will bet anything means it was South Korea.

Signs that the U.S. is opening its doors to refugees from North Korea, starting with a group of six who found asylum there Saturday, suggest defectors may soon be able to choose whether to go to America or South Korea, with many expected to pick the former option.

A survey conducted by the Chosun Ilbo on Monday among 100 North Korean refugees who settled in South Korea found that 50 would go to the U.S. given a choice and 46 South Korea. The others were not sure.

Of those who chose the U.S., 22 said they were unhappy with the South Korean governments North Korea policy. "Because I hate Kim Jong-il I risked my life to come all the way here, one said. What is this nonsense? It's gotten to the point where you can't tell the difference between North and South Korea. The government's policy on North Korea is wrong."
