Well, as I do have a keen interest in this thread, I thought I would provide this link.

This kind of stuff truly interests me, hence studying it in university. Korea is middle of the pack when it comes to corruption. In fact they score a 5.0 out of 10. Korea on the other hand is not a middle of the pack country. They are far above the middle of the pack and it is disappointing to see that level of corruption.
I do agree that things will be changing soon though, it seems people are starting to really get sick of it.

I find it funny that people expect Korea to be up to Western standards in every way, when it has not had the development or democractic traditions of the West for even nearly as long. |
This argument is week though. Nobody is expecting it to be up to par with the West. However, looking at all of the other democracies around Korea, they all score better on the corruption index and all had a really poor level 25 years ago. Why has Korea been lagging behind in cleaning it up? Honestly, I don't know. I do know why countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have cleaned it up much better though. However, that takes about 35 pages to explain.
Does corruption affect the life of most English teachers here on a daily basis? Generally, I would say only the ones working at a school where they don't pay their taxes and whatnot.
However, there is nothing wrong with discussing it. |

So typical, berate Korea while guilty of being the same thing. So nobody here complaining about the corruption level in Korea has ever done privates? And never avoided paying all their taxes from all of their jobs (hagwons and privates)? Of course not, because I know you people are above corruption. |
exactly. i've never done privates, yet i think korea is a very corrupt country. does that mean i'm not going to be tied in with other corrupt people? |
I'm not saying everyone has done privates but I'm guessing many fellow teachers have. Doing privates is rife in this industry. Also not paying one's taxes properly .... I am saying people should look at themselves, at their own group's behavior before judging others. |

How many esl teachers dont pay thier taxes properly? Tax is taken out by the employer before pay is handed over. |

Yeah, it's supposed to happen that way, but does it always? |

And you're suggesting that most ESL teachers have the resources to check whether their boss is properly paying all taxes? |

Ressources?
Oh you mean like the ability to pick up the phone and make enquiries with the tax office? |

I think some ESL teachers are aware that taxes and contributions when they should be deducted aren't being deducted. |

Why should it be thier concern? It's not thier responsibility, legally, it's the employer. Are you trying to equate the fact that some dodgy hagwon owner is not paying your tax ( and you either dont know this is happening, or dont know what to do about it in a foreign country where you dont speak the language ) and the deeply ingrained systemic culture of business corruption in this country that runs right to the very upper echelons of the chaehols and government? I call that stretching... |

Korea is dirty as hell, and everyone knows it. I don't harp on them too badly these days, as they are taking measures to clean themselves up. It's this old generation here that's still in power that grew up with it, with a president that paved over a stream for his own leisure, killed people that he didn't like, etc.
Just try to offer a cop $5000 bribe for something. No one would ever accept it. They would assume they're being set up, and don't want to lose their pension.
In Thailand, I could take $1000 worth of Bhat and prolly get away with driving someone off the road. |
