|
|
I like my job here. I have been here seven months. I like teaching and working with kids. And the kids like me. My life is simple. Gym>work>sleep. Lots of fun at the weekends.
I came to Korea signing a contract without getting it reviewed.
Now I would like a holiday. I am the only foreign teacher at my hagwon so I realize that this might give my hagwon a problem.
I JUST REALISED THAT MY CONTRACT MENTIONS NOTHING ABOUT HOLIDAYS. OH CRAP.
Is there any law that says allowed a certain amount of holidays per year?
Crosses fingers.
(Im anticipating a smart ass comment like Its lucky you like your job.because youll be getting ZERO holidays.)

Try to negotiate something with your boss--if everyone is happy I think even the most workaholic Korean can understand the need for a "hyu-ga."
Tell him/her you'd like to explore Korea |

Korean Labor Laws actually states that you should get 10 days paid vacation. |

If you have a good relationship with your director, you may be able to get some time off. I had a great director at my old hagwon and she let me take 3 days off (no other foreign teacher) when I asked...and that was in addition to the specified "vacation days" in my contract. She knew that I gave 100% and was willing to give me a few extra vacation days.
What have you got to lose if you ask? |

Great. Anyone else know this as FACT? Any links?
My boss doesn't speak English. All communication is through a Korean teacher- this has become quite troublesome. It's never a case of just asking a question and getting an answer.
Does anyone know Korean for "Labour Board"? |

Just a quick warning...if you do go to the labour board route to get your holidays, be prepared for the crap to come. You may get screwed on airfare, salary, bonus, etc. because of it. Is it really worth it? The better way might be to work on a good relationship with your boss, which seems to be the most important thing anyway. |

Only during their second year upon completion of the first year with a near 100% attendance record.
For people in their first year, they are entitled to two things:
1. One day a week (let's say Sunday).
2. One day a month. (one Saturday for example).
By having a five-day work week, the mandatory minimum time off has been met.
Even if you work in the second year, one's holidays can be counted towards the Saturdays they get off. |

In my 4 years in the land of mourning clams, I have yet to get the vacation days promised in the contract. They always weasle out of it one way or another.
I look at it this way though. If I work for a year, I should be able to save enough to take my own vacation...........a couple of months or so and then find another job afterwards. |
