I just had an adult student keep saying Germany won World Cup 2002... he remembers them winning and I cannot convince him (without evidence) that indeed Brazil won.
Goes to show what games and discussion go on in Korea: Germany won against Korea and Korea then lost to Turkey. End of story.
I wonder how long it'll be before Koreans think they won the World Baseball Classic. |

They didn't!?!? They had the best overall record!! And they beat Japan 2 out of 3 games! And they beat the US! |

reminds me how the Soviet propaganda machine told their own people they won the 1972 Summit Series in ice hockey against Canada ("the West") simply because they scored more goals overall (ignoring number of games won/lost)  |

I'm surprised that Cha Do-ri is just a reserve. I heard his father (one of the greatest Korean players ever and played in the German top league) has threatened to not anchor the play by play for the broadcast if his son doesn't start. How petty!
My favourite three players are there: defender Song Chung-guk, midfielder Park Ji-sung and forward Lee Chun-su. **clap, clap, clap** ( also like the calm collected poise of the now old goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae.)
It's sad how much negativity still surrounds Song. Comes from the wrong sort of family background, was a surprise controversial Hiddink selection in 2002 and played very well in the tourney, in fact, their best defender imo despite the hype to that Lee Young-pyo guy.
Park Ji-sung I was RAVING about after world cup 2002 and yet Korean after Korean after Korean downplayed him and talked about others. Park was just not considered a star. Are you blind? I thought. Then Park signed a huge contract to play in Europe with ManU and suddenly he's a superstar in Korean eyes.
Lee-chun-sul is just fun to watch! He does everything well: ball control, running, dekes, passing, everything except... shooting! gawd is he a lame shooter. Reminds me of Sergei Samsonov of NHL ice hockey: puts it in the keeper's chest or wide of the net.
Aplayer I really don't like is lazy Ahn jung-hwan who is pathetic to watch half the time. He just walks around, stands, moves like he couldn't care less. But admittedly at the last possible minute he goes bali, bali and runs, shoots well and scores! (a very korean trait?) |

His father (Cha Bum-keun) should be remaining in Korea and working to improve his stuttering Suwon Samsung Bluewings side instead of swanning off to Germany to commentate on World Cup matches.. but that's another story entirely.
Four games until the tournament starts:
May 23rd v Senegal (Seoul)
May 26th v Bosnia & Herzegovina (Seoul)
June 1st v Norway (Oslo)
June 4th v Ghana (Edinburgh)
Hope they come through those games without any injury problems. |

A friend has already put down a tenner at the bookies that Korea won't score a single goal. With shambolic finishing typical of Korean strikers, he might cash in. That donkey Seol Gi-Hyun is a perfect example.
Korea's most important player, imo, is centreback Choi Jin Chul. Was overshadowed last time by Hong Myong Bo, but I thought he was the better defender. Absolutely stifled Figo when they played Portugal. Definitely the anchor in the last third of Korea's half.
Song, for me, is a surprise inclusion. Personally, I would've picked Cha ahead of that useless and ovverrated tw@t Park Ju Young. That plonker couldn't finish his dinner. But I suppose the press would've been calling for a sacking had that happened. |

I love the omission of veteran goalie Kim Byung-ji. He's the one who allowed five goals against the Dutch in World Cup 1998, and was lucky to be named back-up to Lee Woon-jae in 2002. The national team's roster was totally changed after Guus Hiddink took over, as perennial starter Choi Yong-soo was relegated to the bench.
About Cha, the guy is so overrated. Eintracht Frankfurt doesn't even know if it wants him back since he was moved from striker to defender. He's on Nike commercials with soccer superstars yet didn't make the World Cup roster as a regular.
I say Korea still has a good chance of advancing to the second round as the team should beat Togo and Switzerland, if not erratic France. But yeah, I have to agree that playing away completely changes things. |

I was hoping for big gatherings at city hall or stadiums..
but I figure when games are playing at 9pm the spirit will be alive
it will be lunch time here.. but the 3pm games means it will be 6am here
korean games are in the week days too..

No, I think you were right first time IG. Germany is GMT +1, we are GMT +9 = 8 hours difference.
However, Germany runs DST so in summer there is only 7 hours difference. |

Look at my previous posts; Spain had valid complaints, Italy maybe 50-50. Do I think there was a conspiracy involved? I wouldn't be surprised if some linesmen were paid off; remember the Roy Jones Jr. fiasco at the '88 olympics?
Anyway, to those of you who are writing Korea off, remember that most of us wrote them off last time around and look at what happened.
France could barely find the net during qualifying; ditto Switzerland. This is possibly the group that will be the lowest scoring in the tourney, mark my words.
We'll be looking at 1-goal margins of victory. Switzerland won't score 2 goals in their entire group phase. |

I'm originally from Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball's home. Now played in how many countries? Its wasn't a lady game, meathead.
I moved as a kid to Boston. Therein is the best ballgame you can buy a ticket for. The Boston Red Sox. What a beautiful day, summertime in Fenway Park.
