|
|
Hey all,
I just had a weird encounter. Using a chat client online, after chatting for a while, this person told me they had traced my address, and through co operation with the government, via the service provider, are going to locate me...
Is this possible...?? |

It is possible IF they were a law enforcement agency AND you were in the states.
If you are here and they are there (or anywhere else).... all they could get would be your IP address.
Not likely a hope in hell that they could or would be able to communicate with a Korean service provider (not to mention that there is little to no cooperation internationally for this) and a warrant issued in one country is not enforceable in another.
Unless you were selling national security secrets to North Korea... you can rest easy. |

Unless they own the website, they can't even get your ip address is what I have been told. Even if they could, everything ttompatz said is right. So fess up. What did you say to make them threaten you? |

It has been my experience that one can obtain an IP address with a very simple (several lines of script) program. Especially if you are talking via a messenging service.
Can they track you.......sure.......if:
A) They know someone who works at the ISP.
B) They are a pretty good hacker
C) Have a subpeona (sp?). |

Depends.
If you established any kind of direct connection to the other computer, it's possible.
What kind of chat was it? If it was say, Yahoo, then it would be very difficult without having an "in" to the Yahoo server logs. If it was a direct connection chat, or you sent a file, webcm connection, voice chat or something, then there are easy ways to find out who you are talking to in terms of an IP addy. |

The chat client, was something similar to MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger. I hadnt threatend them in any way. Just mentioned that the last 2 months I have been teaching a bit without a visa.
Now whether I have or not, actually done that... is of course speculation. But in Korea, who knows . My buddy got the boot, for what he wrote on a resume. They hauled him in and phoned everyone on his phone list, until someone told them the info they needed to kick him out.
Im leaving in 2 days anyways, but still, was a bit of a disruption. |

Out to do a bit of scaremongering? How many people use static IP addresses? Not your average user, I'd reckon. Should Steelhead be worried that someone could narrow it down to a few thousand similar subscribers? No. |
