|
|
I am looking at jobs in/near Seoul. I know that some churches are currently growing in membership in Korea. I hate to sound ignorant of local culture, but, as I mostly am:
Are there churches in the city that offer Episcopal, Unitarian, or I suppose maybe Congregational masses in Seoul? In English? (God probably wouldn't care what language it was in!) Is Christian Church usually on Sunday morning like in a lot of other cultures?
Thanks,

I had the same problem when I came over - there are no liberal Christian services over here. It seems your choices are anally retentive fundamentalists or nothing. You can find happy-clappy American charismatics or fire-and-brimstone Korean literalists, but finding any group of people who'd rather think with more than 1% of their minds will be next to impossible, even in Seoul. |

quite liberal in music and worship style |
But still quite fire-and-brimstone? |

I am also a liberal Christian, and you will definitely not find a liberal church in Korea. There are some liberal Christian ESL teachers floating around, but they are so far and few between, it's almost impossible to get together on a regular basis. I am in Suwon - if you will be in Seoul, perhaps we could get a group together occassionally, but not every week.

I tried to send this earlier, but it looks like my message got lost in cyberspace. Count me in if anyone wants to get together for something like this. I, too, would enjoy connecting with some other liberal Christian expats, and I'm not too far from Suwon.
As for a church, if you're in Seoul, you might want to check out the Chung Dong First Methodist Church. It's an easy walk from the City Hall subway station. Take the exit for Deoksugung. Walk past the palace entrance and turn right. Walk a few more blocks, and the church is on the left, right across the street from the Chung Dong Theater. It has an English speaking congregation and some great mission/outreach programs. |

Did the op really say "Congregationalist Mass". Never in my entirety have I ever heard of these two words used together. Congregationalists don't celebrate Mass. Mass is a uniquely Romanist and High Church Anglican phenomenon. Protestants celebrate the Lord's Supper/Communion. They are not the same thing. Please never embarrass yourself my referring to Congregationalists celebrating Mass. Ditto for Unitarians.
Sheesh. Unitarians and Congregationalists attending Mass. I'm at a loss for words. |

I've been once. It's a nice meeting with nice people, mostly Korean. It's too far for me to travel, but I would recommend it if you're close.
