So, what do you think of the stuff? At first, I thought it was pure rotgut, but now I am beginning to like it more. However, I still like the price of the stuff better than the taste.
But I am wondering how many foreigners out there like soju? Soju hasn't really found its place in the world market. Is it racism against Korea or do most foreigners think it's best used for disinfecting your bathroom? |

Gogi jips use it to break down the fat spat from the grill....so,its used as disinfectant here already.Very good at removing stains too.
I'm hoping some of the "upmarket" sojus that are to be released soon will be good.I bought "hanju" at the korean village near Chungmuro station some time back. That was really nice.Very crisp and clean tasting...like a good vodka. Not too grainy, not too neutral... |

Just because soju hasn't made it to the worldmarket doesn't mean you can conclude it's because of a racist attitude against Koreans. Most people around the world don't even know where Korea is located on the map let alone induldge in soju.
As for the drink itself, I found it disgusting. It tastes like the cheapest beverage that my mouth has ever had the misfortune of touching in my entire life. I have come to believe that the reason I am seeing so much puke on the streets here is due to the fact that so many people are drinking soju and for no other reason other than the fact that it's "popular in Korea." I don't blame the people who barf after soju as I'd barf myself too! I do however blame the establishments that serve the stuff because they should always serve it complete with barf bags.
Soju = cheap and you get what you pay for. |

i'm not really into it.

I drink it on occasion, but the taste is so bad that even a chaser won't help. I have to chase it with food, or better yet, a big slurp of spicy soup. And then my stomach feels all gross, though.
One time I slammed an entire bottle just to see what would happen. About 2 seconds into the process, my throat started clenching reflexively, and I had to relax it like a woman slobbing Ron Jeremy. I certainly did throw up after that, too. |

I can't eat the following without soju:
Samgyeopsal, Galmaegisal (most barbecue really)
Raw Fish
Budaechigae/Chamchichigae
Dalkkalbi
I think there are some foods that soju compliments.
Soju+Samgyeopsal+Rice+Kimchi+Lettuce = Heaven. |

You just had to say, "Ron Jeremy" didn't you! Now I need to throw up all over my laptop.... thanks. I don't know which is worse: soju or Ron Jeremy. But the combination of the drinking soju while thinking of Ron Jeremy is certainly enough to make me puke for a week or more. Oh GAWD! Blahhhhh

I find that in recent years I've lost my taste for hard liquor altogether and now stick pretty much to beer and wine. I say pretty much because I can always be talked into trying something new and because in some situations I can be convinced to take small doses of something strong.
But I probably can't be convinced to indulge in soju again. It generally tastes rough and leaves me feeling rough the morning after. |

Like I've always said: Never trust a foreigner who says he likes soju...because you don't know what else he's lying about. |

Would you say the same thing about the millions of Koreans who claim to like soju? If not, why not?

While I can eat those things without soju, I generally agree with this sentiment. And I might posit the corollary that, to me, soju doesn't go well (taste good/right) with most other foods.
I personally don't like the taste of soju much, particularly those first few glasses. And when we order that first bottle, I always wince and hesitate momentarily. But given the right food and atmosphere, I'll not protest when we place an order for subsequent bottles as required. So in a sense, if this poll were asking "How Much Soju Do You Like?", then I'd say I find even one glass of the stuff disgusting, but a bottle is most welcome.
Personally though, I much prefer makkoli and I prefer it at the minsokjujeom, where I will eat all sorts of things that wouldn't appeal to me terrifically outside of that particular setting and without that particular libation. |

does a bear shet in the woods?
actually, i usually drink beer. occasionally, if me and the blokes were running low on funds we would drink it mixed with something -- orange or pineapple juice and it provided a cheap and potent buzz.
i agree with the above posters about it going well with certain korean foods.
i over consumed one night at the soju kettle on the hill and suffered perhaps the worst 2 day hangover of my life. respect the soju!
once you get used to it i don't think soju is any worse for you (or worse tasting) than your cheaper american liqueurs or japanese sake. |

Me, too.
My friends tell me that I don't really like Korean food. What I like, they say, is soju and the 'anju' that goes with it...닭갈비, grilled beef/pork, 갈비찜, 닭도리탕... I don't disagree with them. |
