I was reading Adbusters and happened upon a tiny wee ad for global writers for the magazine. Just thought I would mention it on here as so many people seem to enjoy writing (in some form). If anyone's interested, the ad is on the last Letters to the Editor page in the May/June issue. |

I bought it at What The Book in Itaewon, but I also saw it (for about 6,000won more) at a couple of the big bookstores near Cheonggyechong. |

Well thanks for sharing your opinion, though I am unsure as to why you gave it at all. If your not interested that is your perogative, but your negative comments aren't really neccessary or relevant. |

Heh, don't venture into the buy/sell forum. I think some people make it a hobby of coming on here just to trash things. |

I used to read Adbusters. I got bored with it because there wasn't enough diversity in terms of topics. They seemed to rant about the same 3 or 4 topics (globalization, environmental destruction, thoughtless consumerism, and awful TV programming) in every issue. This however, was 10 years ago. Maybe, hopefully, the publication has matured and expanded its coverage since then. I'd be curious to pick up a copy if that store is still selling it.

Ha! Indeed, I know that to be fact on here, I just couldn't stop my little fingers from typing that slightly uptight response! I suppose sometimes I am powerless to stop myself from bringing more $#%& down on my head! |

I thought the text in Adbusters was produced by randomly selecting papers from a wastebin in some liberal arts college. |

Well, I am sure that it is still the same, ranting about 3 or 4 different topics...I just picked one up after at least a year, it is about torturing POW's etc...not sure if that has been covered but well, when you are a supposed anti-establishment, anti-commercialism, anti-capitalist and environmentally friendly publication, how many topics can you really talk about??? Pah! I still enjoy a quick perusal to keep myself in check every now and then. |

R. U. kidding? It's easy to diversify in terms of subjects covered. They could do articles about private healthcare in America, Unions across the country, the pros and cons of the recently rapid expansion of the oil industry in Alberta, articles about how the average Joe / Jane can cut down on his / her waste.... The range of topics is limitless. The problem is that I think Adbusters spends the bulk of its budget on trying to make their magazine look slick with all kinds of cool computer graphics. They're too small or stingy to put up the money to get some good writers.
Instead most of their articles read like some 16 year old who just wants to say "This sucks" and That sucks". If you really want to know anything about the real world, you'd best pick up a copy of Z Magazine or any of Noam Chomsky's books. |

Hmmm, you are correct about all of that, I don't disagree in any respect, I was making an attempt at lightheartedness on the subject. I should say that I have read articles in the mag on some of the subjects you mention. And I agree completely with the slick look of the mag as well as the ranting 16year old writers. I am sure I could go on and on about the vicious circle of a publication that attempts to be socially responsible in the midst of a world that relies upon the very things that question that social responsibility.
I just happen to think it makes for an interesting read that is MORE socially responsible than Cosmo and not nearly as weighty as Mr. Chomsky. I do appreciate the recommendations on the real world, I am sure too that I can find the very readings that will stimulate my social responsibility on my own if I need to.
Really, I just thought that there were some interesting writers on this site that may like to voice some opinions in a more official capacity. |

I was drunk when I wrote that comment. Back in my freelance writing days I came close to doing something for them. I later worked with one of the Adbusters editors at another magazine.
The magazine itself is always visually compelling, but their campaigns are annoying and the articles are clogged with smug. I'm glad I didn't get sucked in there. |
