I'm very pleased that my school has an anti-tobacco day today. They have posters with diseased lungs etc. outside the school, and select students are wearing anti-smoking armbands. A very positive move.
Smoking is a terrible habit, and second hand smoke is (in my opinion) a form of assault. Glad to see that the GEPIK people have decided to tackle this issue. |

At elementary school? Do any of the kids actually smoke?
I'd love to see them try that at my school. At least I go out back where the students can't see me. The male teachers will smoke anywhere - the teachers' lounge, the toilets - I've even seen a teacher smoking in the classroom. The PE teachers will smoke right in the middle of a PE lesson. But since smoking is such a gendered activity here it doesn't seem to be much of a problem. |

Does that mean if you are fat and smoke you will get thinner if you quit?
There is an anti-smoking campaign going on at my school too. |

I've seen people lose a considerable amount after starting, actually. I started smoking regularly when I was doing my MA and dropped about 15 pounds in one term. |

| I went to the local fitness club to take a look a couple of weks ago. As soon as I opened the door I get hit with a wall of smoke. The adoshi is sitting behind the desk smoking away. In a friggin health club! |

I am a smoker and agree that it is a bad habit. Educating children about the dangers is a very good idea if done appropriately. However, I have a couple of questions for the non-smokers...and I am not being sardonic.
First, why do non-smokers feel the need to "inform" me that smoking is going to kill me while inhaling cookies and telling me about how drunk they were on the previous night?
Second, I do not go around non-smokers and light up a cigarette. I will find an area to be alone or near other smokers. On one occasion at school in a frickin field, by myself,I lit a cigarette. Why on Earth did a non-smoker have to come out there and tell me that second hand smoke is deadly and that I should not smoke in public? Ummm...well, if you don't want me to smoke near you don't breathe near me.
Third, do non-smokers think that they are educating me? Do they think that I do not know the dangers of smoking? Is it really plausible that I have not heard of Zyban/Wellbutrin, nicotine gum and patches? Do these enlightened educators realize that scare tactics do not work?
I really would appreciate your input on this matter. I am just trying to understand. Thanks in advance. |

| I'm teaching middle school today and I just got a lecture from a very emphatic twelve-year-old about smoking. You just keep telling yourself that the rest of the world is backwards and Korea makes perfect sense. |

Because they're idiots who will most likely develop Type 2 diabetes, along with the majority of other categorically obese Westerners in their age group, thereby placing more of a strain on their respective country's health care system than those suffering from lung cancer or emphysema ever did. |

I had a boy (12-13) until a couple of weeks ago, would come up to me outside, stick his nose as close to my cigarette as possible, and then while waving his hand in front of his nose, declare that it smelled bad. I knew he didtn understand anything i was saying, so i said something like, "if you stand near me, you will get cancer and die in a week." The only other employee, a Korean teacher, was standing behind me and translated it. What an idiot. The boys parents pulled him from the hagwon.
I smoke. Thats the way it is. I agree it's a bad habit. I also agree that there are places to smoke and places not to smoke (health club?!). You dont' need to tell me about it. It just annoys me and i might creep into your home at night and blow second hand smoke on you. Once a night for a few years..... |

Most people who die of smoking-related illness do so after age 65, and this saves the goverment the government a considerable amount, possibly more than treating smoking-related illness costs. |
