|
|
Hi guys,
I'm looking for a high school job in Seoul or the surrounding area (Bundang, Ilsan, etc.). I'm a 34 year-old American with over 4 years experience teaching in Korea and Japan, a TEFL certificate, and several workshop/seminar presentations. I will earn my M.S. TESOL from Indiana University next month.
I'm not too concerned about salary, but I do want a job with a lot of vacation. I've been on the JET program here in Japan for the past three years and have spent six week stretches sitting at my desk with no work to do. I know that Korean schools have basically the same schedule, so those public school jobs with 2 weeks of holidays just don't cut it; I'm looking for a gig that will give me time off (either paid or unpaid) during the summer and winter breaks.
I put my resume on worknplay, englishspectrum, and eslcafe but so far haven't gotten any good offers; it seems that most folks aren't even reading the ads, since they say "I'm looking for a high school or university position" and I've gotten a bunch of "come teach in our kindergarten!" offers...
I live in Fukuoka, Japan and can fly to Korea for interviews. Please PM me or reply here if you have any good leads and/or suggestions.
Thanks |

If you have looked at the job board of late, there have been a whole host of university gigs being advertised. You need to go for these jobs yourself instead of waiting for them to come to you. I'm sure universities never recruit via English Spectrum resumes, either.
That's your lead. |

As I mentioned in both the subject and the message, I'm looking for high school, not university, but thanks for the reply. |

Send your resume to SMOE (for Seoul) or GEPIK for Kyonggi Province (Seoul satellite cities).
They will be recruiting in August for the Sept start of the 2nd term. |

Your problem in finding a public school gig in Seoul/Gyeonggi Do with good vacation in the contract is that those gigs are fast drying up as the adminstrators in those areas are trying to standardize their programmes, which generally give two weeks. Some places might give you more under the table, but it's impossible to know until you've been locked into a contract.
In short, the best way to ensure that your getting a gig with good vacation is to go the university route. If you have your heart set on school aged kids, remember then you're basically throwing your vacations on the whim of the adminstrators at your school. |

That's what I was afraid of. I've saved up a lot of money on JET, so I'm getting to the point where vacation time is more important than salary. I get 25 days of vacation (plus national holidays) right now and that's barely enough.
It wouldn't be so bad if I had work all the time, but there are several times throughout the year where I spend lllloooonnnnggg periods of time sitting at my desk doing nothing. On JET, I spend around six weeks in the summer and five weeks in the spring doing absolutely nothing. I can use my personal vacation and take time off, but if I don't do that I have to go in and do...nothing. I'm pretty sure that Korean schools have the same system and I really don't want to go through that again.
Thanks for the replies. |
