MAY. 11 10:52 A.M. ET Deficit spending by the U.S. government is eating away at the United States' competitiveness, but the country still remains atop world rankings with Hong Kong and Singapore nipping at its heels, according to an annual survey released Thursday.
The World Competitiveness Yearbook, published by the Switzerland-based IMD business school, ranks 61 national and regional economies according to 312 criteria that measure how the nations create and maintain conditions favorable to businesses.
"Nations need to provide an environment that has the most efficient structure, institutions and policies," the report said.

It said the United States and France showed the biggest difference between the performance of their governments and the performance of their economies.
"Budget deficits and debt are running higher in both countries, calling into question the efficiency of the state," said project director Stephane Garelli.
He said the U.S. deficit, which has reached US$318 billion, is worrying not only because of its size but also because it is financed with foreign money.
"At the same time," Garelli said, "the U.S. and France are still the second- and fifth-largest exporters in the world thanks to their very dynamic enterprises. In these two countries, business outperforms government."
The report said Hong Kong in second place and Singapore in third for competitiveness were catching up with the United States, which has topped the list every year since 1994, because their government policies are better tuned to economic performance.
Rounding out the top 10 were Iceland, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Finland.
Venezuela was at the bottom of the list, immediately preceded by Indonesia, Croatia, Poland and Romania.

Why weep when the bastion of the free market is number one at creating the free market? |

Q?
What is the US deficit as a % of GDP.
What are the causes of it? I think Tax cuts by the Bush administration are only a small reason for it - most of the reasons behind it are because of things beyond the control of the president.
There are many reasons for high infant mortality rates, but I don't think the major reason is lack of federal spending. Especially since in many states women are provided with free prenatal care.

I could care less about people shouting USA. I just want to see the US win. And those around the world who hate the US ought not be allowed to get what they want. |

I agree how cut-throat (ie. competitive) the U.S.A . is..........they outperform everyone when it comes to "accumulation" or as the sociological term goes, "acquisitiveness". This is what the U.S.A. is tops at and what the term "Competitiveness" should stand for....
Definition
Acquisitiveness describes the greed to increase one's possessions, to acquire, hoard and save. It can be aimed on material or immaterial fields, depending on the development of other faculties. It stands for the love of oneself's capital and is thus basically a self-centred faculty.
Lots to cheer about for the U.S.A......but it is hit and miss. Depends where you live..........In total, the U.S.A. outperforms the whole civilized world in many other categories too......just off the top of my head (and I may be wrong by a millimetre or two..)
Guns/ capita, Murder rate, serial killers/teen aged killers /child molesters/child criminals, hours watching violence on TV, executions, forest land cutdown, military expenditure / capita., teenage abortions, out of wedlock pregnancies, lack of geographic knowledge of other cultures/states, obesity levels (male and female), incidents of domestic violence and marital conflict, politically sanctioned violence + use of force to settle political disputes, use of nuclear weapons on civilians, spending on domestic survellance of citizens, lesbianism, income disparity between rich and poor, acres of green golf courses, drug dependancy/use (prescription and illicit). carbon dioxide emissions, number of religious extremists/fanatacists, covert and overt foreign aid to terrorist states, use of U.N. veto, highest individual debt levels, psychological illnesses, expenditure on hair products, ok, I will stop now. ......my one minute is up.
Let me direct you to my Fav. Walt Whitman. I also agree with him, as he wrote in his magnificent preface to Leaves of Grass (which Americans shunned for decades).

the US has a lot of problems but they try harder than others to fix them.
Other nations would not do as well were they in the same situation. |

wha?
I can't imagine you have spent that much time in a hospital if you believe that. Anyone I know whose been in the hospital for ANY length of time has STILL had pretty monstrous bills esp considering that individuals/families have to hire outside nurses to do the jobs that regular nurses back home do (change sheats, food and such).

Care to provide 1?
Cause I can give you one: Inadequate health care for birthing AND expectant mothers.
I mean REALLY joo...at par with Poland and LATVIA???? Don't you find that SHOCKING?
Or is that just a Malthousian paradise you're attempting to sweep away as inconcequencial? |
