A student of mine considered making a speech on why marijuana should be legalized here. I asked where she got the idea and before she answered I asked her if she'd been hanging out with a Canadian friend these days. She looked at me like, "How did you know?" She said she had indeed been hanging out with a Canadian and now was keen to give the stuff a try but wanted it to be legal first. A few month back I was teaching another students who told me that at the hagwon she used to attend, her Canadian teacher spent a great deal of class time trying to convince the students that marijuana was okay. I'm used to meeting Canadians who use marijuana (and other stuff). It seems like 90 percent of them do. But is it common for them to try to convert their students too? Why is pot such an essential part of so many Canadians' lives? |

I blame the Dutch.
That freewheeling hippy attitude of theirs was smuggled into Canada inside tulip bulbs, I'm certain of it.
Why, a student once told me they even let babies smoke cigars there! |

so, how many canadians have you met?
90 percent eh? (no pun intended) that'd be like what, 27000000 canadians smoking the mary j.. that's amazing!
but seriously, if you've met over ten canadians (in different life situations) and they all smoked pot, then wow,i'll be more inclined to agree with your statement. |

why do canadians like pot? Prolly the predisposition to being laid back (what some people consider apathetic smugness)...? maybe?
Why some Canadians who come here become pot prophets is beyond me. you want to wait till it's legal? Pffft...forget about it.
I think they try to convince their students it's a good idea cause I (and perhaps they) think that pot would help this overstressed, overworked culture so much more than alcohol would. I certainly wouldn't go telling anyone to go smoke grass though.
MANY many young canadians do smoke HAVE smoked pot. I did. I liked it. i think they did too. |

Back in the UK there are hundreds 'pon hundreds of weed smokers, its kind of like a cultural thing. I used to love it myself! But encouraging your students to try it is pretty bad I think, and surely could lead to lots of trouble if your employers/recruiters/the law found out about it... |

We're just like anybody. Most of the foreigners here in Korea went through university, so of course you're going to get a lot more potheads. |

I'm Canadian and I've never smoked pot...
Most Canadians I've met have, though. At my last hagwon here they used to talk about it longingly all the time. It was kind of annoying. |

Me too. I've been at parties where I've passed joints and hash cigarettes down the line but never partaken myself. That said, keeping it illegal is a ridiculous waste of time and police resources. What I don't get, however, is people who come here knowing it's strictly forbidden and then bitching and moaning about not having any. There's a very good reason why I'll never live in Saudi Arabia, and if potheads can't avoid Korea for the same reason I have very little sympathy. |

First of all, people don't use marijuana, they smoke it...
Second, Canadians must be like kiwi's then, liberal and laid back. We like our pot.
However, talking about pot to students in Korea is a very stupid thing to do. And coming here and then complaining about the lack of it is also pretty lame.
I enjoyed having a good long break from it when I came here. Found no withrawal symtoms or longings. And it did make those trips to Thailand all the sweeter...

Canadians believe simply that the harmful effects of pot are no worse than the harmful effects of alcohol. That said, people are better off not using either of them. To tell your Korean students that these drugs are good is irresponsible. Such teachers should be fired on the spot. |

During my life (I am Canadian) I have smoked pot twice, but once was only quickly and 'I didn't inhale", it was just basically do it or these 6 guys were going to beat the shit out of me. I really have 0 desire to do it, but pretty much every other person I know in Canada does it, except for a few guys.
I don't really care if people want to do it, but I can't stand hearing about it. It's a great way to get me to leave the conversation. It's the same when I am talking to someone and they say "Dude, I got soooo smashed on the weekend, I had like half a forty and like 10 beer". To this I usually think, good for you you f어킨 loser.
In Korea, I know a Canadian lady who used to smoke it a lot, but then her dealer was caught and he said she was the dealer, and without so much as even a trial, she got 2 years in prison. They ended up deporting her after about 3 months in prison, though. I thought it looked good on her, the stupid 삐츠. Whenever people defended her it pissed me off. She knew the law and she chose to break it, too bad for her.
If you want to smoke it, go back to Canada, or wherever, where they don't give a 시트! |

There had been a long history to this, and there was always a lot of tension, but usually relatively even numbers until this one time I was by myself. Although, I never got into an actual fight with them, a bunch of my friends had and every single time, they had started it. |

ajgeddes, with "f어킨", "삐츠", and "시트" you've just gone up a notch in my estimation.
Still some way to go of course .... but keep up the good work. |
