Well, this is the first year of the Village, so everything is brand new. The accomodations are nice, we live on the 4th floor of the institute. There are classrooms on the 3 floors below us. I like just walking down stairs to work at the last minute. The kids sleep in a building next door, so when classes are over, you dont really hear them. You can hear the evening activity a little, 7-9pm mon-thur. Were required to work one evening a week, but you get paid OT.
Pay is between 2.4-2.8 plus OT. We get free lunch in the cafeteria, and eat the other meals on our rooms. We get a stipend for food every month becuase we are in the middle of no-where. You can catch a bus, but only a few times a day, so a car is nice here. Its pretty and very quite, so overall I think its great. I couldnt live in a noisy city, ever. Hope this helps.

Private accomdation of course. Furnished one good size room, with fridge/freezer, large sink, toaster, double hot-plate, microwave, iron, tv, computer, bed, dresser, table, 2-chairs etc.

No curfew, thats insane. You can go and please as you wish, we would refuse a curfew but its never even been mentioned. We all have Korean co-teachers, which is good and bad. Your done everyday by 5:30 unless its your night activty. Fridays your done at 1:00, they take us in town to get groceries/bank etc.

Do you like living around the kids? Me personally I like living like an adult in a real building away from any kids. I like not having to be taken to town for groceries. I mean what happens if you meet someone you like and want to bring her over? Its insane. Ive done a winter camp and quite frankly 2 weeks was ALL I could manage. Thank god we were allowed to go to Seoul for the weekends because I couldnt go 2 whole weeks at a camp. No matter how nice the accomodations.

Exactly...if you meet someone nice you'd be worried that the guy on the door is gonna squeal.Have to put a sack on her head or go to her barn....ok,anyways...

And who'd want to be surrounded by teachers all the time?

A short while back, a group of Korean investment reps, some English consultancy firms and a team of bag holders/ CEO adourers, ( I think) went to Paju to check out the village and steal the ideas for future ventures in Korea.
I was included in this as the token whitey I guess.
I went up there very sceptically. I am a purist when it comes to Education...no wait..that's crap, I like to see kids sometimes learning in Education settings...so I was expecting the usual mayhem.
Actually what I saw was most kids speaking English and smiling. I know I was only there for a few hours, but I hate to say it, I was kinda impressed.
The concept is great and most of the Koreans were participating actively. Made me think of the dead classrooms I have taught here.
The place looks great! The teachers seemed to be into it.
The working conditions for the teachers don't seem to be too gruelling and they get compensated well I am lead to believe.
But OMG!!! the Koreans have spent some money.

I wonder who mops their floors and wipes their toilets, the teachers or those hunched-over adjumonis.

That earlier picture was kinda cool. I wish more teachers would put up pics of the place and others. We need an infiltrator to go around snapping pics of these places.

I wouldnt do it for 4 milliojn won. Or 5 million. Theres something dehumanizing about having to spend a YEAR at a camp away from the real world. At my work Im there 9 to 4:40, 5 days a week. When Im not there I dont want to see another kid, I want to live in a real place not some camp dorm. I guess its ok for a newb who is here for a year and then goes back home but not for real people.

I think a few of the whiteys there were a bit annoyed by my friend and I going around snapping pics of them for our own amusement, but that's what they're there for and we paid to get in. Laughing

Here's about one fifth of their fabulous gym:

Look, it's Whistler Village!

Its like a zoo:) Monkeys on display Smile Its a great idea to snap photos of them..show them what they chose to do.

Seriously, can anyone tell me the benefis of working at one of these places? Because the money just aint that great to live like a monkey in a zoo for a year. So they make 2.7..where can they spend it? What can they do? They need to bum rides from people just so they can go to town? Holy crap.

It's freakin' Disneyland man!

I'd expect more monkeys outside in marching-band style uniforms and a mascot outside greetin' people.

It would be especially lonely come winter time up that far north.

And where is the cotton candy, popcorn, and balloons.

I noticed a lack of trash cans on the street. Are there sewers there? I'd watch out for the rats in a few months. Very Happy
