I'd heard that this didn't happen very much, but 2 weeks into my gig and I am not getting told very much at all. Like where my students are up to in the dreaded books, what are 'study periods' and what are 'classes', and what I am actually supposed to do in said study periods and classes, not to mention the last minute cancellations when I've done loads of prep! Thankfully my students are very helpful in this respect, and are pretty good at telling me where they're up to, but is this what I have to look forward to for the next 50 weeks??

Yes, pretty much.

The lack of information and the last minute changes are not unique to hakwons. Not by a long shot.

In the public school system as well as hakwons, last minute cancellations and changes are normal. Be thankful that UNLIKE hakwons, in the public school you do not have to make up for canceled classes.

In regards to what is happening when, ask your minder for a school calendar of events. They have them made up for the year and they are usually posted on the schools webpage. That will give you a pretty good idea when you will get cancellations and some of the changes.

I assume that since you are a newbie you probably don't read Korean so ask for help. If you don't ask for help, they will assume that you are doing just fine and will let you flounder along until you figure it out the hard way. Because many things here are implied and not said specifically (UNLIKE AT HOME) you will have to ask repeately and get then get clarification to ensure that you understood their expectations. DON'T BE AFRAID TO TELL THEM THAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOMETHING.

You can ask your minder where they should be in the books and they get up to speed and back into the curriculum timeframe.

Purty much....

I have a separate "office" to the other teachers(just as well, can't stand how hot koreans keep rooms in winter and there was a fire last week)so I'm left well enough alone. Was told that was a privilege for me,in actuality its so the teachers don't have the inconvenience of having to deal with me.

If you get wind of a big school dinner be sure to turn up regardless of being told or not.You don't get many perks as it is.They finish quite early with my school.

BTW,do other public schools have PTA meetings scheduled today?Hmm...teachers day yesterday..."Chonji Day"today??

You need to be pro-active rather than reactive with infomation.

Bug your co-teachers. A lot. Most schools have month and yearly calendars of events. Get them to give you a copy.

Enlist your own 'student maifa' when my korean wasn't so good I used to have informants who would tell me about stuff for some regular candy.

But as far as I know. May 31st is a holiday. So is June 6th.

There are listening tests on the 14th (first grade), 15th (second) and 16th (third) of June during 3rd period.

There is a Gyeonggi test on the 21st of June that will take all day. Finals will be early july. School's out mid july.

Yes. Just ask your "supervisor" for as much info as possible and if you should get an unexpected day or period off make the most of it Smile

Koreans, I swear, have a way of passing information between themselves via some chemical means. They just assume you can read the pheromones too.

especially regarding days off/cancelled classes. I think it is on purpose;if I had known in advance that I was going to be off last week, I might have been able to go somewhere....

Just found out about the open class next month, too. Wonder what that will be like....

Funny! Or it could be that it's communicated by some morse-style code via smacking noises made during shared meals.

I just found out five minutes ago (9.10) that at noon I'm going off with the grade one students on a trip today - right after I finished copying all my handouts for today. Until then nothing to do but fart around on Dave's. This will make three weeks in a row when I haven't taught my Wednesday first graders. Oh well... Rolling Eyes
