Hello people:

This is my first departure from Korea. I want to confirm what I need to do with these two pieces of info: The Alien Registration Card and an Exit Order of which I will be departing on the May 12 deadline. I don't want any hassles at the airport. Any suggestions and tips so as to make things go as smoothly as possible.

Make sure you depart before midnight on May 12 and give your ARC to the immigration officer on your way out when he stamps your passport.

Walla Problema.

what happens if you don't turn over your arc card. Rather, you take it with you? I can't assume anything bad will happen...

If you don't hand over your ARC you will be taken to a little room where you will be grilled at length by a surly Korean, who will then demand that you pay a fine of W100,000.

(This was my experience in March 04. I wanted to keep my ARC as a souvenir, so I told them I didn't have it, my boss kept it, blahblah, then after all the above-mentioned happened, I miraculously 'found' it in my wallet. Embarassed )

The way my luck's been going over here...well, let me ask now what is the penalty for an overstay beyond the deadline?

Generally speaking, it is a 100,000 won fine per each day you overstay. although some people have managed to evade this by pleading ignorance/batting their eyelids at the immigration officer.

I overstayed my first time here. Oh so many years ago. Plead ignorance and they might let you off. I didn't have to pay.

I paid. Sometimes they don't let you off.

When I left my old job to go on a new visa run, I thought I was O.K. My ARC did not expire for 2 more days. WRONG! I did not check the stamp in my passport, that had expired a week before.

For some strange reason I only had to pay a 35,000 fine. I just calmly said, "I am so sorry,I did not realize I had to check my passport. Look, my E2. It says I have 2 more days".

All depends on the mood of the person that you talk to. (and I am not young and cute.)
