| If you exchange English lessons for TKD classes, Korean lessons, housekeeping, or whatever, is it still illegal even though no money is changing hands? |

Yes, this is right.
Language exchanges are safer, yes, but not more legal. |

| Yes, it is illegal no matter what. Even if you volunteering at an orphanage or something and no money or serice in return is being provided, it is still illegal. |

Technically illegal, but straight up language exchanges, a mostly social arrangement where you help a Korean with their English and in return they help you with your Korean, are very, very common and often done in public.
I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for doing a language exchange. |

Same here.
However if this would become English for various goods and be multiplied in many "exchanges" then it could lead to trouble (could but unlikely anyway!). |

I would love to see an IMMI officer bust up the local ring at Starbucks and hear everyone shout... but they didn't pay me!!??
For some reason I don't think it'd matter all that much. |

| Yes, even unpaid 'work' goes against E-2 regulation. But, as other posters say, it's pretty easy to get away with. It's hard to define what exactly 'offering your services' can mean. What if you opted to help some old ajumma with carrying some groceries up a flight of steps with an ulterior motive that you could practice some Korean while you do so? - this could technically be illegal even though most of us would think this would be a ridiculous offence to be busted for. I'd say go ahead, you'll be quite safe. |

Jeez, I certainly hope immigration doesn't send it's goons after me every time I have drinks and octopus with a couple Koreans... "language exchange"? Who knew? |
