A website was recommended to me: melon.com. It's a where you can listen to and download music (though only for your computer, not for ipods I don't think). There's a lot of terrible Korean music out there but I've found some I like...and thought I could use the site to find more that I like. 4,500 won for a month doesn't seem so bad.
But, in signing up I'm asked to give my registration number. There is a little box I can check saying I'm a foreigner, but it seems they still want some number in the box, since they won't let me proceed. Trouble is, I'm not in Korea and don't have an alien number.
Any way around this? |

You could try e-mailing the admin and explaining your situation to them. Failing that, you'd have to get someone with an ARC No. or Korean ID - I'm not sure if this would have to be syncronised with the payee details also. |

I hate piracy sites where you have to pay to register. So do Korean musicians.
(I also hate sites that require Korean ID numbers to register.)
You can find plenty of Korean music on Soulseek. |

I have a friend coming over any minute now to help me with my Melon registration. I was able to "register", but when it comes down to the part of actually subscribing, there's no option for an alien registration number. I put in mine and got a message saying I need to enter a "real" number. So, either I'm doing something royally wrong, or I'll have to ask my friend to let me use his number.
I'll let you know how it goes. However, you do need to register as a resident alien. It's a simple process.

Hi, there-
Well, I can't register as a resident alien, since I don't live in Korea. I'm in the U.S. and won't be in Korea anytime soon.
The whole citizen registration thing is starting to tick me off (and I know I'm not the only one, Korean or non-Korean). When are they changing this silly rule? Koreans wonder why more "real foreigners" (as opposed to overseas Koreans) don't learn Korean or otherwise participate in Korean culture. Well, it's because most websites are set up assuming that no foreigner would ever want to. |

Yeah, trust me, you're not alone in that frustration. Actually, there's even an online petition about it. I believe Mithridates drew it up? Look how many people have signed - almost 2,500.
About Melon, we didn't end up doing that. My friend works for an internet radio station and has a 6-month free access code for another site (muz.co.kr), which he also felt was better, so I'm just using that.
As far as registering Melon without even an alien registration number, I don't think it's possible. About a year ago, it was possible to listen to full length songs online at Bugs.co.kr and other places, but then it suddenly changed to 1-minute previews and required registration. That was a big disappointment for me.
Sorry I can't do anything to help you. Maybe if you have a Korean friend, you can ask them to sign you up with their number and you give them some money to cover membership fees.
