| Hey, where are all these qualified older teachers? We looked and looked. We wanted an experienced, older teacher and couldn't find one. Now I've got to train some young newbie. |
We are all quietly hiding out in the suburbs and ejoying the land of the morning calm instead of stressing out in the big city. |

| I could retire in Korea if I end up marrying a Korean guy^^I have to get Mommy's approval first...so it won't happen anytime soon, if ever. I wouldn't teach my whole life in Korea though. I'd become fluent in Korean and probably get into bartending or working in a flower shop surrounded by beautiful flowers. The pay in a flower shop would suck, but if I were married, I wouldn't care so much. |
Or you could work at a noraebang. |
True. Most folks say I'm a good singer too. I just don't think I'd want to sit with strange guys, amongst other things, though^^ |

WHAT!!!!!!!!!
Belting out tunes and undoing belts isn't your thing?!
A flower shop will only torture you...you will see all the beautiful flowers HE didn't get you instead of those he did, and a BAR will only serve to torture you more seeing all the NEW LOVE spawning before your very eyes.
....back on track....
I agree - if you have some pictures of you in the classroom, all smiley and yet professional surrounded by students, it is a good idea to include them. Also, in person, with a positive attitude could win over any skeptical employers.
And unless you truly look ancient the kids and most have no idea how old you are....I get told anything from 20 to 45...(31) |

For what it's worth, I'll be 55 in a few months, having a ball teaching here in a Korean public school, for top dollar I might add, thanks to a bachelor's degree, a TELF certificate and two years of teaching experience in Thailand prior to arriving in Korea. I never experienced age discrimination during my employment search and was offered a variety of jobs from several recruiters before settling on this one.
I'm saving my money and planning on retiring in Thailand in a couple of years.
Life is good. |

Well, HE suggested if we get married, working in a flower shop. NO, he's never bought me flowers, but he made balloons into the shape of a flower for me and he's given me jewelry and beautiful princess-y blouses. He's also taken me for nice dinners, including one at his family's home, and we spent a wonderful weekend in Nagoya together. He's also bought me chocolate. I had a corn on my foot and he took me to a pharmacy and bought medicine, took my pretty high-heeled shoe off and proceeded to put the medicine on my foot while the pharmacist and other customers watched. We both giggled. It was so sweet!!! All of this is just as good as flowers. AND...he carries my purse for me.hehehe |

How many times has he dumped you because mommy was opposed to you? Arent you in Canada now? Shows you how much he cares to do nothing and have you be away for months from him. if he cared wouldnt he propose and get you over to Korea instead of letting you desperately look for work to try and get over to Korea and doing nothing about it? |

Well, we had a disagreement on the phone March 16th and we didn't speak after that until he invited me to his cyworld again April 28th. I'm sure you saw my thread about cyworld. We emailed each other last week. But, no, he isn't getting me over there either. |

According to at least one Office of Education, native English teachers older than 45 are not qualified to apply for teaching positions.

Is this good? "If you are older than 45, you need not apply." |

| Is it possible to make it a career? |
You could make a career out of it, but I wouldn't recommend it. EFL in most places has the reputation of being a low value, low wage job by western standards. I believe that Korea is slowly catching up with the rest of the world in this respect. Wages will stagnate while inflation holds steady at 4% a year, eating into your ability to save money. The Japanese market has apparently been undergoing the same process for the last 10 years.
In teaching English, the cardinal sin is getting comfortable. As soon as that happens, your bargaining position goes to shit. You always need to be able to walk out at a moments notice, or you will get trod on. I firmly believe that Koreans don't want us here long term, anyway. I think everyone should take the hint.
Bottom line: I treat this like a job, not a career. |

| I'm 72 and still going strong! Thank god I start in the afternoon because I'm not a morning person. The evenings, however, are a little tough on my frailing body. I have to sit down a lot because I have a bad knee and use a cane. |
