I swear dogs here bark only at me. Honest. They smell the foreigner on me. Or maybe it's the lack of garlic and soju on my breath that sets them off? |

When I went on my visa run to Japan there were many "people of color" standing in line right along with us white folks. I was a bit surprised at the high number of non-whites because I'd heard all the stories about racist Koreans myself and how hard it is for non-whites to get jobs here. Based solely on my experience, that's not the case.
That said, are you sure Korea is the place for you? It is not a country where one generally finds exotic experiences and memories for a lifetime, unless one likes cheap rice moonshine, Starcraft, horrendous Korean hip-hop and tacky fashion. You come here for money. For fascinating experiences that lead to memories of a lifetime you take an English teaching job in a remote fishing village in Cambodia. |
I see what you're saying.
But for someone that's never been abroad, i'm sure it will be a very exciting/nerve-wrecking/frustrating time all at once. I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for it, as i'm expecting it to be nothing like it is here in Los Angeles.
And actually, horrendous Korean hip-hop, tacky fashion, and yes, even cheap Rice Moonshine are just a few of the things i'm looking forward to coming across in the process. The incentive to be able to save money is just a mere bonus for me. Oh yeah, and the proximity to other cool countries which would allow me to do some traveling on my vacation time. |

You're wanting to travel, then make sure you don't get a hagwon job. The "10 days of vacation" in each contract isn't going to cut it. I'd suggest looking for a public school. I've heard a lot of them are cutting back some on the vacations, but I'm sure you can still find something offering at least a month or two. I'm in a hagwon now and heavily considering going to a public school next year for that reason alone. |

See also:
Less working hours/classes
Higher pay
More random days off on top of vacation
More respect from the students
Less intrusive parents
More support from your faculty
Interest in education vs. making money
I can't imagine under any circumstances going to work for a hagwon again. |

Damn, I didn't want everyone to know that about me, so I try and project that onto others.

Amen to that brother. I nabbed a public school job this year and it's a dream. All the above is true. I'm never setting foot in a hogwan again. Plus add to the fact that you never have to worry about getting paid on time or worry about your pension or tax payments "disappearing" |

Reason...only pointing out that you already have a bag full of conceptions about a place you have never been to. Unless you have been here of course in which case you have a bag full of crap.
Enjoy.
