Two Koreas' Top Brass Resort to Racist Mudslinging
The second day of talks between North and South Korean generals on Wednesday got off on the wrong foot when delegates stooped to mudslinging over the racial purity of Korea.

... the South Korean delegation said such dilution of the bloodline was "but a drop of ink in the Han River," adding this would cause no problems "if we all live together." But this failed to mollify the North Korean. "Since time immemorial, our nation has been a land of abundant beauty. Not even one drop of ink must be allowed to fall into the Han River," Kim thundered.

"Our history shows that we were able to maintain the purity of the Korean race even while living together with the Jurchen and the Manchurians of the region," Han countered.

Koreans have been rodgered by so many foreign peoples throughout their history that such claims to purity are absurd.

What the heck do they think happened to all those babies?

Mongolian, Pacific Islander, Chinese, Japanese, etc.

Geez. Rolling Eyes

(Hasn't genetics advanced enough to tell them of the various other peoples represented in the Korean population: for those who can't open their eyes and see the different physical characteristics.)

Christ. When will we finally be able to apply the phrase "consigned to the ash heap of history" to North Korea's absurd ideology?

It's going to be a big bunch of fun if the North and South ever unify. Those guys up there are like the most un-westernized Koreans you have ever met.

Foreigners in South Korea will be like decadent devils to them.

And so instead of telling them they're racist, backwards idiots the Southies attempt racial apologetics.

As we once again see demonstrated, anyone who says Korea doesn't have huge and highly unusual problems with racism is so full of BS.

In that situation I would have too. I wouldn't want to be responsible for derailing an international meeting of countries technically at war, would you? You have to pick your battles wisely.

At the same time, it's not much of a stretch to conclude that the North was looking for a reason to act pissy and break things off. They know that the worse they behave, the more eager Seoul is to make concessions to them.

Shifting topic slightly, you should see the racism that exists within South Korean society itself, that between the "beautiful" white skins of Seoul and the "ugly" colour of those from Busan, Jeju etc. I wonder how these existing prejudices fit into the fear of "coloured" babies?

Anyone with half a knowledge of history could easily have pointed out to the Norks how many ethnic groups are in their blood, instead of playing along with the myth. I had a roommate who was prone to making quite a few racist remarks; he was half Maltese, and when I'd respond by speculating about who all might be in his bloodline that quickly shut him up.

There are so many denial complexes Korea will have to get over if they ever hope for reunification.

This is what hapens when you isolate a group of people on a virtual island, cut them off from the rest of the planet for hundreds of years and more. Its a bit like darwin's evolutionary theory gone wrong.
They develop their own unique comforting/defensive belief systems that have no basis in reality. And behavioral ways that don't relate to the outside world. Ever heard of the Galapagos?

This type of talk is deeply disturbing in this day and age, and does not bode well for things to come. Eugenics was rubbished years ago. There is something more than vaguely fascist about this kind of racial purity talk.

Yes, but be real.. the SK general who started that was in all probability just trying to find a way to paper over the difference of opinion so they could talk about the important military matters that was the whole reason they were meeting in the first place. It wasn't the appropriate time for a lecture on the evils of racism and the benefits of multiculuralism.
