I'm a newbie- on this board and in Korea. I've been here for 5 weeks (working almost every single minute of that time) and my employer seems to have no plans to pay me any time soon- if at all.
Even before the pay problem started, the other foreign teachers here (I'm American- there's one other American, and two Canadians) showed no interest in helping me in any way. Questions about Korea? Tough. Questions about the classroom? The job? Dealing with kids? The parents? Again, nothing.
Now, they think it's HILARIOUS that I haven't been paid. I've been dealing with the problem entirely on my own- with some advice previously posted on this board.
People should stick together- if four Koreans were teaching in the US, you'd bet your bippy they'd help each other out. Even if they have their "own thing" going on in their personal life (whatever that may be), a decent thing to do for a co-worker would be at least a little heads up about SOMETHING. They've been totally useless.
Surprised me- the Koreans here have been more helpful, PROFESSIONAL, and sympathetic. They have pay problems with the employer, too. |

Jerks is too kind!
Let me guess.....you arent the same age as them?
I noticed my first year that some people are a-holes. At the hogwan I worked at (7 FTS) 4 of them formed their own little click and wouldnt have anything to do with the rest of us...we were'nt cool enoughl, we werent the same age as them, we were intelligent(which means we didnt go out and drink ourselves sick every night, we didnt trash talk Korea and our students enough, we saved our money and didnt piss it away etc.)
As for the not being paid....go in and ask when your payday is(it should be listed clearly in your contract) but if you started on the 1'st and your payday is on the 10'th then you are almost there. Ask for an advance if payday is still weeks away. If payday has come and gone demand your pay! Contact the labour board if need be. |

I'm sorry to hear that dude. Where do you live? maybe you could meet up with some nice foreigners who could help you out a little more. They won't know about the insides of your school or hagwon but at least it'd be better then nothing.
Seriously, your coworkers sound like retards. |

I'm not known for my empathy/sympathy online--but that DOES suck. I've always gone out of my way to make life easier for my co-workers, particularly if they're new to everything and/or replacing me. There's nothing more frustrating than having a question that only a few people can answer, and getting uninterested or incomplete replies...or none at all. Sorry that you are having a rough intro to teaching here. |

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but have you talked to your boss about it? If so, what was said about it?
Others on here have reported playing hardball until they got paid. Iow, show up to school but refuse to teach classes until you get your money. Your co-teachers would stop laughing then, too, I imagine. |

This sounds pretty typical...in generarl, you can rely on no one but yourself. I only have one friend, who is a foreign teacher, that I can have conversations with about classroom ideas, lesson plans etc. He's the only other foreign teacher that I've met that I can have logical discussions about certain problems that come up and so forth.
Generally, when I've tried talking to other teachers about classroom ideas etc., it comes down to, " Korean children are devils and I hate them." And if I try to talk about a problem or get some help its, "that's the way Korea is, you can't do anything about it...hahaha...let's get drunk."
I hope it works out for you. Good luck. |

I'm glad I lived so long to see this ... CORPORAL is being nice.
I thought it might happen someday, but I was never really sure. I will mark the calendar for this one.

Ignore the foreign teacher problem. Concentrate on getting your money. Yes, it sounds like your co-workers are jerks. Are they asking for updates on your pay situation? I know that that would get a laugh out of me only because it's just absurd/unbelievable. It's hard to think that they wouldn't be concerned and wanting to know whether your pay situation has been corrected or not. If there are a bunch of foreigners there then they should team up on the employer. Who knows? Maybe the same thing is happening to them.
Did you ask them to pay you? What did they say? Don't let your employer mess with you like that. Don't be nice about it either. Scream "Where's my money?" in front of everyone if you have already asked about it. If you haven't inquired, ask, "Is there a problem with my pay?"
I'm assuming you have an E2 and you're legal. If so, show some balls and go after them! It's no doubt hard being a newbie, but you're a legal employee and you don't have to stand for this crap.
If you don't see all of your money, make a disturbance of sorts. Walk into the middle of one of your co-workers classes and say, "Did you get paid? I didn't get paid?" Walk up to the front desk "Where's my money? Why haven't I been paid?" Walk into the bosses office, "I can't teach. I haven't been paid? What's going on? What? What? What?". Do this during one of your classes and walk around in circles around your boss's office and in the lobby. "What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?" Then walk into the middle of another teacher's class and start the whole cycle again. End it all with a "Ok. I'm going to call the labor board now. Yes. Now."
KICK UP A FUSS!

your coworkers are truly horrible, I'm glad to say that when I got here that my coworkers couldn't have been more helpful or accomodating. You need to go to your boss and ask when they are going to pay you - they might not realize your payday has gone by, for my first payday I had to remind my boss and he paid it into to my account straight after I talked to him. Talk to your boss see what happens. |
