Get your airfare here prorated if you do pay anything. YOU are not the one leaving they are firing you! You shouldnt be libel for any airfare!

You have been here 3 months....-prorated airfare would mean that the max they should deduct from you is 1/2 the cost of the ticket here....if they say 700,000 won then you should only be asked for 350,000won.

What does your contract say?

the Labour Board also says that an employer must pay you your full amount of pay. They are only allowed to deduct taxes. That even follows for phone bills etc. They must collect the money from you after giving you the full amount. here is a link to the Labour standards act: http://www.molab.go.kr:8001/download/_20051220144304549.pdf
you may be able to pull some more jewels from the document.

I want to urge you NOT to key her car, or smash her windows, spread lies etc.
It will not do you any good, it will confirm her suspicion, and it will give all foreigners a bad name.

Instead, do your research, approach her with a level head, and get a small cassette recorder and record all your conversations.

Reread your contract, it seems that her firing you, and taking back airfare is a bit ridiculous.

Do NOT do what other people on this thread are telling you to do. You can be sued for slander in Korea. If you go around spreading stories (even if they are true) you can be sued for millions of won. And you are a foreigner, which leaves you at a disadvantage in the courts.

So what about telling the truth to the labour board? After all, expats are always being told to "grow a pair" ... or don't you agree?

I would be as cautious and calculating as humanly possible within Korea's borders, and merciless without.

Grow a pair and tell the truth, but not if it hurts us right??

If the airfare was 3000 euro, wouldn't reporting that as the actual cost be telling the truth...I mean since we are trying to be noble victims here on this board. And for Grotto, yes we should pro-rate these tickets, so 1500 euro would be correct, not $350.

I'm a bit confused about the airfare. Just because there's an amt printed on the ticket, doesn't mean that that was what was paid. Who bought the ticket? Sounds like she did, and the 700 amt mentioned sounds more realistic.

I wasn't talking about the labour board, nor were some other posters. They were advising bad-mouthing the hakwon to customers. That is slander. Before the labour board is a different matter.

As for growing a pair that means standing up to the boss. That includes when your pay is late as well.

You are really reaching here.

And it's easy to talk big when you are not in Korea.

OBTW good point Mr. IwalkAlone

My point exactly! You were discouraging "talking big" when actually in Korea. So essentially, you are expressing agreement with my "cautious within, merciless without" comment.

Actually, I am also against vandalism and telling lies, so I'm with you there. However, I fail to see how telling the truth can be slander, except from a purely subjective, earth-is-flat-and-that-random-stranger-has-evil-eye worldview.

Get your head out of your butt....
This AIN'T Kansas.....(er... This AIN'T ...Canberra )
WESTERN rules DO NOT APPLY......
TRUTH is NOT a defense against slander in Korea...

If you damage a person's business image....
You WILL be found LIABLE for her losses in a Korean court....
EVEN if your statements are TRUE.

In Korea's case, I believe you.

As far as facts go, it's pretty sad.

Thanks alot. No, I'm not going to key anyone's car, but not because I don't want to. I can either handle this in a positive manner or a negative manner. The important things for me are getting my money, and getting my LOR. After that she can stick it up her ass for all I care. I believe very much in Karma, and this little set back is only a way on to bigger and better things for me. No worries, but saying that, I want what I deserve. Cheers

And as for the ticket. It was paid for by her, and all I saw was the enormous amount on the ticket itself.

I'm checking out the labor laws now. Maybe y'all can help.

Article 28 (Prohibition of Offsetting Wages against Advances)
An employer shall not offset wages against an advance or
other credit given in advance on condition that a worker offers
work.

Would Advance mean plane ticket? I'm not really good with legalase. Cheers

Things I'd suggest you do.

1,Contact someone at your local labour office. If they're sympathetic or forwarding with information or a clear perspective on how to approach this, finsd another person at the same office.Keep hammering away!!

2,get your pay.Check with the above as to what it ought to be,contract stated or otherwise.

3,Go into damage control with your boss. She may well spring other surprises on you...eg recruiters fee.which she may or may not have ever paid.

4,Jobhunt!

5,Dude,I have to ask though...why didn't you bring a float with you...?
