wow interesting to see that most people are staying. I'm half way through my first contract and I'm think I'll sign on for another year too, more than likely at my current hagwon (if they want me Confused ). Like the job, like the kids and have not had any (significant) problems with the boss or coworkers. I am enjoying the life I have in Korea

Not everyone stays forever because they love it, or leaves after a year because they hate it.

Some people come with the intention of not making this a long term thing, and when they leave it's not because they are desperate to get out as much as that they have other plans.

There's a forgotten group, because everyone implies that you can either cope with Korea or you're a weakling who can't. I've lived in far worse places and am still more or less sane.

This isn't a long term thing for me (I mean, I'm not going to get married to a Korean and spend the next two decades teaching), and that's because there are other things I already have planned.

There are also the gap year people on their big 'life experience adventure'........

You're right. I neglected to make that an option. I apologize. Embarassed Let's ask people to also post their response if it applies to them too.

Absolutely! The nonsense with my boss and money this past 15 months has truly been the only negative experience here. The (other) people have been wonderful, the food is delicious, the climate...ok, the culture nice enough, my students (for the most part) a joy.
Now if I can only get out off the hagwon treadmill.....

I didn't mean to sound rude.

It was more a reaction to the, "You're not staying? You must be some sort of wimp!" attitude that is prevalent on these boards.

Plans change. You're not going to do this and you're not going to do that.

I was going to finish my 1 year and be gone. Not that I hated Korea so much that I didn't want to return, but I too had plans that did not involve me living in Korea for 5 years. But......alas........1 blind date 2 months from departure and everything changed.

Never say never.

anyway, my wife is teaching this year, and then we go back cause I have plans with my career. otherwise we'd probably stay at least one more year. and heck, we might even come back in a few years!

Natalia...I too had plans to come here 1-2 years and go back home.....

Then into my first year I met this woman here and bam...plans were tossed out the window!

Been here since 1997....and adapted my plan to new conditions.

As it was said before...never say never! Wink
