|
|
I've been using Bittorrent for the last several months to keep myself up to date with my favorite shows from back home, and I was wondering who else does so and what they look for. I thought I'd get the ball rolling:
House
The Unit
The Sopranos
Scrubs
[will begin DLing Deadwood when the new season starts]
[a final show which will remain secret to all but those who know me very well]
There are a few others here and there, but these are the big ones. Anyone else looking for downloads the day after a show broadcasts? |

You can download shows the day after they air? I am planning to be in Korea by next spring and I was wondering what I would do without my weekly doses of CSI and House. Do I just go to a site and download? |

Here's how it works. Someone somewhere has some combination of HDTV, Tivo, and a computer set up for their favorite show. The show broadcasts, and the person saves the (HD) broadcast to their computer without commercials or anything like that.
They then create a torrent file, which is basically a little directory of where their computer is so other people can find it. They then upload this torrent onto a torrent site, where people go to look for these files. They download it, and then can connect to get that file. Once they do, the directory file is updated with their information as well, so now you have more people sharing that original file.
The whole system is very slightly different than Napster or the like, because it de-centralizes the whole thing. By doing so, it avoids certain legal complications, as well as (I believe) making for a much more agile and responsive network.
The bottom line is that in Korea, I'm able to watch a HD quality copy of the Sopranos usually on Tuesday morning, about 24 hours after it first airs at home.
What I'm really interested in is seeing what people get from back home--surely we're not all watching Korean TV all the time? |

Some shows you don't have to wait until the next day. South Park is online usually a couple minutes after the broadcast is over.

Huff and Big Love are two of the best shows on TV right now, not to mention the fact that The Sopranos is airing now. And I can't miss Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. Oh, and Lost. Uh, and, no, that is all I'll confess to at the moment. |

Hey now, don't forget that Deadwood starts its third season in a few weeks. I read somewhere that the third season was seen to be good enough that they delayed aring it because they didn't think it needed to be teamed up with the Sopranos. Good, I guess, that it's going to be good stuff, but bad that I gotta wait for it.
Two (semi) side questions. First: has anyone bought the Deadwood Season 2 DVDs here? I have all the episodes DLed but I'd be willing to shell out the money to have the extras (commentary and such). Unfortunately when I bought the first season DVDs here, they leave out the extras and I've found myself unable to communicate this question to the guy at Yongsan.
Second--anyone else as disappointed with the last several episodes of Sopranos as I am? Particularly the episode with Arty and his restaurant I found to be really annoying. The first few episodes were good but it seems like they're wavering a bit now. |

I'm glad the brokeback johnnie cakes side story seems to be heading to it's conclusion.. that annoyed me more than anything.. found it pointless... I didn't mind the Artie bit.. I thought for sure he was going to get offed at the end of that ep though. |

Sopranos
Simpsons
Family Guy
Prison Break
Desperate Housewives (the women look good in jeans)
Most of the latest movies
Just finished the 22nd episode of Prison Break today. It's getting a little out of hand though.
There are some movies that aren't available or that require a different file type. Good to have all the players. Real Player and VLC cover most. Then there's DivX or something. Haven't attacked that one yet. When you download one of the files for the DivX player, it seems to be broken down into multiple 14 MB files. Seems weird.
If you download movies too soon after the release, chances are you'll get a bad quality, but it's free. Waiting for Davinci Code this weekend, but it got some unfavorable review at the Cannes. Maybe it'll be good though. Didn't read the book.
Anyway, it's great. I have a 19" LCD screen. My TV is sitting on the floor unplugged. Never use it. I guess it'll be plugged in for the World Cup.
