I've seen this topic covered elsewhere, but I can't find any threads on it.

The final date on my ARC is July 14th and the final date on my contract is the 17th. July 14th would be a year exactly in the country, so I assume that's when I'll finish. (I assume but don't know for sure.)

Now, if I don't extend my visa, when do I have to be out of the country? I've heard "5 days" a lot, but I"ve also heard 24 hours, 14 days, and many other answers. (http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=15494&start=30&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)

I'm sure many people here have had the same thing happen to them. When are you legally finished in Korea: the ARC date or the contract date? And when do you legally have to be out of the country if you don't extend your visa.

And since I'm on the topic, how would an American go about extending my visa? I thought I read on here that you can stay on for an additional amount of time as a tourist . . . so I don't have to be employed to stay in the country for another week or so?

Thanks for the help.

And what the hell do you do when you get paid after you've left the country and you can't access your account from outside of Korea?

You are required by law to depart the country (be cleared through passport control) by midnight on the final day of your ARC.

If you need an extension for contractual purposes, simply take the contract, your ARC, your passport down to immigration, pay the 30k won extension fee and it is done in about 15 minutes.

This is for ANY and ALL contract extensions (1 - 365 days).

If you need a SHORT extension for the purposes of "finishing your affairs in Korea" and some "tourism", simply take your ARC, PASSPORT and AIR Ticket down to the immigration office and they will extend your ARC until the date on your ticket.

You can do this anytime within the last 30 days of your visa. There is NO charge for this short extension (usually less than 2 weeks duration).

Ask your bank for an international ATM card cause you are going on vacation.

If they won't do that, then pre-arrange to forward any funds in your account to another account on some specific forward date.

Side note: why would you trust your hakwon to pay you after you are gone?? Get paid when your job ends and BEFORE you leave the country.

NOTE TO OTHERS WHO MAY READ THIS: NEVER ACCEPT A CLAUSE IN YOUR CONTRACT THAT LETS YOUR HAKW0N WAIT TILL AFTER YOU ARE GONE TO PAY YOU FOR ANYTHING. Last workday is when ALL matters should be cleared up.

you're supposed to leave by the date on the ARC, but you can bring it and your contract to the immigration office and get an extension til the contract ends.

Just be warned- if you want to stay in country for a day or two after the contract ends, you'll need to show a plane ticket for your departure too

I'm not trusting them and I'm certainly going to ask for the pay in advance (the money I'm owed when I leave is something like 5 million). I'm just trying to cover all bases. My boss is a bit of a scatterbrain, and there's a very small window where I have to be out of the country (ticket restraints).

And, thanks. Very Happy
