From the Herald:

Korean women most anxious to lose pounds

Young Korean women are the most conscientious when it comes to losing weight, according to a recent study conducted by the University College London on 22 universities worldwide.
Koreans ranked one notch above Japanese women who were found to be the most likely to perceive themselves as overweight.

Overall, "perceptions of being overweight and attempts to lose weight were highest in the group of Asian countries where body weights are generally low, suggesting that local culture and norms could moderate attitudes to weight," the research team said in an abstract in the International Journal of Obesity where their study was featured last year.

American and British students, who actually exceeded the Asians in terms of body fat, were moderately concerned while students in the Mediterranean region turned out to be the least concerned about their weight.

The study was conducted on almost 20,000 students around the world and aimed to explore the links between actual body fat, weight perceptions and attempts to lose weight in male and female university students.

Results showed that 77 percent of female Korean university students were constantly attempting to lose weight. That percentage topped the 70 percent of neighboring Japan.

But Japanese students manifested a higher tendency of viewing themselves as overweight.

Compared to the 43 percent of Korean students, over two-thirds in Japanese schools consider themselves overweight and felt pressured to shed their pounds. Another 70 percent said they were watching their weight.

Over in the Mediterranean, less than 40 percent of the females saw themselves as overweight. About 42 percent were trying to lose weight.

Meanwhile, gender was a significant indicator since regardless of the level of body fat, more women perceived themselves to be overweight. Men were also notably less concerned with weight issues.

The research team said the discrepancy was worrisome because males may feel more comfortable about being overweight, which would undoubtedly trigger health problems.

The 22 countries in the study were grouped into five geopolitical and economic areas for regional analyses. They are: Northwestern Europe and the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia-Pacific and South America.

So, are Korean women overly concerned about their weight or are North American not concerned enough about theirs or both?

I'd say the latter. Were it about makeup or something of the sort it would be a bit of a different matter but for something that relates directly to one's health it's important. Anorexia can be a problem too but obesity is far more common.

That's interesting ...

I've long been under the impression it was their BREAST "size".

As for the K-men, it's the "size" of *ahem * something else which these days they're taking steps to cosmetically enlarge Wink

I think Korean women are too concerned about their weight. I work with tiny women who are constantly on diets and complaining about their weight, in fact it has begun to give me a complex. It gets realy annoying after awhile.

Of course it's both. If you are turning a blind eye to all of the severely underweight women in this country you are doing them no favours. Too much weight or not weighing enough are both serious problems. And it actaully is better to be a little bit over than under.
