Hi
I wanted to keep my options open so have been applying for many positions throughout Korea/Taiwan but my problem now is they all want my original degree and not a copy!
Any way round this? I really don't want to limit myself to one recruiter!!
How promptly were your documents returned!
I have 12 copies of my transcripts but only one degree!!!! |

| they only need your degree when they are actually applying for the visa, so until you decide which contract you are going to sign there is no need to send your degree to Korea, sounds like the recruiters are trying to get a hold on you - they have your degree so the only way you can get a job is through them, dont send it till you make up your mind which school you want, send it to them along with your signed contract |

Never provide them with your original. Get some copies made and certified by the Korean consulate. Only ever send a copy until you are actually applying for your position. This also includes your transcripts.

Thanks Crystal
The recruiters say I need to send all information so they can pass it on to the school and process my visa!
Bearing in mind what you have said, I think I will send them scanned documents as proof so they can continue their search! |

Yes I actually just noticed this on another forum just now!
Thanks for that, do you know how long certification takes by any chance?
Are there any involved in acquiring certified documents?
Its through the Korean Embassy isn't it? I think there is an embassy in London I could contact i'll look into it tomorrow!!
Can they apply for my visa with a certified degree letter then? |

until you actually pick a school there is no visa to process, be careful with recruiters, at the end of the day they want to make money out of you and some are not all that reputable (if you believe everything you read on this board ). To get your degree certified shouldn't take more than a day, to get mine certified in Dublin there were three different stamps I need to get and it cost about 20 euro. Call the embassy in London to see where you have to go to get it done there. It's best to keep a hold of your original like sadsac said. The certified copy works the same as the original and is safer for you. |

My University's website states that a replacement diploma is mailed 6-8 weeks after you send in the request form! After I have copies made my original is going into a safety deposit box. I am still awaiting the arrival of my diploma and have not yet been to S. Korea.
A significant number of the people on this forum have been in S. Korea for a long time. They have no reason to steer you in the wrong direction. I would definitely take their advice on this one. Even if these recruiters have the best of intentions your diploma could still be misplaced. Best of luck to you in your job search. |

Usually they only want your degree when they've made a job offer and you've accepted that job offer. I don't see the problem. |

| If you haven't accepted an offer then you don't need to send your degree. They're trying to get a strangle on you...to force you to work with them. |

Employers/recruiters can ask to see your diploma AFTER you have accepted a position. Certified copies should suffice. Note that you can get certain documents certified with an affidavit (sworn testimony) for FREE at your local city hall - you just need to take some ID with you and be prepared to wait for up to an hour. I don't know if they offer this service for diplomas in the UK, but I got mine certified for free at a city hall in another country. Otherwise you have to pay a lawyer to certify your docs, or order copies of your docs direct from university - some are free, some not, some fast, some not.
I agree - never send your original through the post. They can sometimes have a tendency to get 'lost' or held for ransome by unscrupulous recruiters. |

Until you sign a contract they do not need you visa documents (i.e. Diploma and transcripts).
However (for Korea) make sure you have a notarized copy of your diploma along with sealed transcripts and this does not mean you put them in an envelope!
Using many recruiters can be a good idea but you might just end up shooting yourself in the foot with too many applications that end up at the same school...remember that schools sometimes work with many recruiters.... |

There is a nominal charge for getting your certified copies. The Embassy will advise you on the cost. The Korean consulate in London will most certainly be able to do it for you. |

Bad advice, Crystal.
You should NEVER send your original diploma - even after accepting a job offer. Go to the consulate, get a number of certified copies, and send those. |

I sent my original and I got it back no problem, perhaps the safest thing to do is to send the certified copies but there is not always a problem. But in giving my advice I was more wanting to point out the fact that you dont send anything till you sign a contract and the visa application process has already started. |
