Korea has been getting to me for the last few weeks. I feel that the best thing for me right now is to go away for a weekend, relax, and contemplate. The best place for me to do this would be somewhere relatively quiet along the east coast. I really don't want a crappy 5 feet wide and half a km. long beach with towering buildings directly behind. Ideally, I would like a rock/cliff-type beach where I can sit in peace for hours looking over and listening to the ocean with a mid-range yeogwan located not too far away (cab ride/bus). Does anyone know of such a place? So far, I've got Uljin, some of the beaches north of Pohang, and some of the islands off Busan in mind. Would these places give me what I'm looking for? Any other recommendations?

Thank you kindly in advance.

Shocked

I went to Sokcho (Gangwon province) about two weeks ago and it was ok.

Nice mountains, lots of green trees, a bit of a beach, there is a harbor with little fishing boats coming and going.

It is a good place for a weekend trip.

About 4 hours each way on the bus from Seoul (it is located close to the DMZ). The bus cost 21,000 won each way.

a couple years ago i really needed a "do nothing" vacation, so i spent 4 days on maengbang beach in samcheok. even during peak vacation season, it was pretty empty and quiet, nice and big.

Go to Nambu bus terminal in Seoul and take the express bus to Gohyeon (Kohyun), which is the city on Geoje Island off the southeast coast. The buses from Seoul are FAST (servicing the shipbuilders) and nice, it's about a four hour trip, zip zip. Several leave a day. I have been inclined to use the night service and sleep on the enormous seats that might as well be called beds when tilted back.

Or, at over twice the expense and not a stitch faster all considered, ktx it to Busan then 45 minute ferry it to Geoje from the ferry terminal near Nampodong. Just jump into a cab in Busan and ask for ferry terminal to Geoje. Make sure you emphasize ferry terminal. They try to convince people to let them drive the long way westward then southward then eastward to the bridge. Don't. It's a three hour drive, under an hour by ferry.

From Gohyeon take a local, any local bus or cab, asking for "Why-hyun beache" (Wahyeon beach) or "Goo-jor-a beache" (Gujora beach). There you will get what you are looking for.

Hwajinpo (화진포), one hour north of Sokcho(속초), large sandy beach, deserted most of the year. Nearby is a lake. Everything is within walking distance, but nothing is on the beach or lake itself, which is nice.
Take a bus to Sockcho, then take local bus No. 1 or 1-1. Get off at a well marked access road to Hwajinpo. It is maybe a ten minute walk to the beach. There is a yeogwan village (여관 마을) along with maybe two or three restaurants nearby.
