Get with the times, young man, you sound like my father!!! |
Yeah, I AM old. I'm from a time when men were men, not metorsexuals and sensitive weak guys that are obssesed with being P.C. whenever they speak. Like Henry Rollins from Black Flag and the Rollins Band (who is over 40) says "This is the first time in history that the parents generation is cooler than their kids'. We listened to Black Sabbath & Slayer and they listen to this watered-down techno shiiit." I agree with him. You should stop worrying about who you'll offend and just speak your mind. Throw that PCness in the toilet where it belongs. |

I doubt that you are chronologically any older than I am, for sure, but you are stuck in a time warp. Black Sabbath? Wake up and smell the 21st century. It's not about PC, it is about respect. It is also not about "being a man"- if you need to prove your masculinity by being rude, well, that is rather weak. |

There's quite a difference between cracker and oriental. Cracker was meant as a deliberate racial slur from the start. No one says cracker because they are uninformed. Oriental on the other hand was not originally a slur, and in fact is still not generally used when one acutually wants to make a deliberate slur. It's more that it has gathered negative connotations and now is seen as "offensive" or a "faux pas". Still, best to avoid it when talking about people.
I'm pretty anti pc too, but it's about basic respect. |

| Of course not, my mistake...cracker is much, much worse because it is an term that might offend some of us whities....my apologies. |
Cracker and honky, like spic and wop are racial slurs. They are all used to cause offence or to denigrate and make fun of others. Oriental is just old fashioned and is never used by people to cause offense, and up until very recently Oriental people were not offended by being called Oriental. In fact, I know many Orientals in the UK who often refer to other Orientals as Orientals. People only became offended when White people with too much time on their hands in 'Ethnic Studies' (and other Mickey Mouse faculties) departments told them that they should be offended.

Looks like you swallowed the musings of Mr Said hook, line and sinker. Ever tried thinking for yourself? |

I have, funnily enough. But I am not a full supporter of it yet. You see, "thinking" is often a misnomer, used to describe an entirely different process than it implies, that convinces some that absolute bullshit like:

...is more true than not. Kind of how the KKK works out it's theories, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, the Bush team started the 21st Century Crusade: that of that sort of thing. (BTW: Is there a reason you capitalize the "w" in white people?)
You see, some people, like this guy I know who posts on this board and has read a teensie-weensie bit about Islam, read and "think" not openly to explore the world, but selectively to find evidence to "establish" their own preconceived prejudices. You know what I mean, BV?
And, if you had read carefully, Joinville, you would have noted that my comment was not referring to Said as having established that the term Oriental was verboten, but that the issue is more complex than one that requires a use/don't use dictum in place.
| Quote: |
Some people think the term "Oriental" is derogatory, largely because of its connection to imperial 19th century Europeans and Americans who are thought to have held a patronising attitude towards the region. Many of these people saw the East as backwards, while the West was seen as logical, rational and more modern. Furthermore, it is claimed that some courses in "Oriental studies" were riddled with inaccurate information that was used to justify colonization of these countries. Some Asian Americans see parallels between the word "oriental" and "nigger", though many see it as simply old-fashioned and functionless, as many African Americans see the word "Negro". The main criticism of the term is that it is overly vague, referring to a category of peoples with widely divergent cultural and ethnic backgrounds and no clear division between which groups belong to the term and which do not. In the USA, the location where most of the objections to usage of "oriental" occur when describing people, the term is often replaced with "Asian", which is also criticised as overly vague and confusing.
Major objections to the use of Oriental are chiefly limited to North America. Its use is much less controversial in Europe and Hawaii, as well as in Asia where, especially in Southeast Asian countries, the word is in comparatively widespread usage. In Europe the term is used to describe such things as the East's cuisine and goods, ancient culture, and religions, at times to denote an exotic quality with upmarket or mildly positive connotations. |
You see, it's all about context. A word that gets thrown around among the Mickey Mouse faculties of those Post-Modernistic BS Departments, like, hmmmm...History, Philosophy and Political Science.
| Quote: |
| Taking a comparative and historical literary review of European scholars and writers looking at, thinking about, talking about, and writing about the peoples of the Middle East, Said sought to lay bare the relations of power between the colonizer and the colonized in those texts. Said's writings have had far-reaching implications beyond area studies in Middle East, to studies of imperialist Western attitudes to India, China and elsewhere. |
Said did a lot to advance active dialog and discussion of the term. What, of substance or import, have you added to the conversation, Crusader?
And that's just from Wikipedia!!
And I will pre-empt your next whining demand for "debate" over hyperbole by once again reminding you that when I find your comments worthy of discussion, I will engage them instead of simply dismissing and mocking them.
But I really don't see that happening any time soon, my brother. |
