I have friends of mine (korean) who want me to bring their kids to my country during their summer vacation. I am just wondering when leaving the airport in korea if i need some kind of document allowing me to bring the kids to north america. They are elementary kids and i'm assuming immigration will want to know where the parents are. Will i need to get their parents to sign a document stating i will be their legal gaurdian?

I havnt done this before..

You will need a NOTARIZED letter (with English translation) giving you consent to transport the children and/or seek medical or other attention if required.

The paperwork problems tend to arrise in the western countries rather than here in Korea. The airlines don't care as long as the children are accompanied by an adult. Make sure that they each have their own passport and VISA if required.

Sorry I can't give more specific advice without knowing where you are going.

Think hard about doing this--I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

You will be 100% responsible for them 24-7. If anything were to happen to them on your watch, you'd be the one hung out to dry. It's a pretty huge responsibility. Why do you think kid's camp liability insurance is so expensive for camp operators? Kids are the original random chaos of the universe.

Are you ready to basically give up your vacation to keep them occupied, fed, watered, and safe? Would they have appropriate accomodations wherever you went? Which activities would you do with them every day? What about health insurance should they need a doctor/hospitalization in an emergency? What about giving consent to any emergency medical procedure?

You cannot leave them alone to go out for a few beers and chill with friends--a responsible adult will have to be watching them at all times. And that means REALLY watching them.

They'd need some sort of travel visa depending upon which country you're thinking about taking them to. This can be quite long, expensive/entail much paperwork for their parents to secure from an embassy.

You definetly would need a legal document putting you in charge of them for "x" amount of time so you can prove you have the p's permission to travel with them.

Just a few things to think about and things to discuss with their parents.

I've done this with middle-school kids. It's not so bad. You do have responsibility, and you will see them all the time, so if you don't really care for them, then forget it. But if they are GREAT kids, go for it! You'll love seeing things through their fresh perspective. But be prepared for a bit of homesickness/culture shock in the first day or three when they are still jet-lagged and newly separated from mommy.

I noticed the original OP discussing travelling with kids overseas was probably discussing elementary students -

but I am also travelling to my home country for the August summer vacation - and one of my ex-elementary (grade 6) students (2004) who is now a middle-school-2 student (14~15) years of age is travelling with me...

I am also interested in whether I will have to take any legal-papers or anything?

the student is very smart, wise and mature for his age - so I never really though of needing any paper work to allow him to accompany me... his parents are fully behind him exploring-the-culture of my country - so I have their full support...

what kind of paperwork would I need - the student has his passport - no need for a visa to my home country (the vacation is only 10 days) and I doubt anybody at Incheon airport would even raise their eyebrows... maybe immigration in my home country might - so I guess if I did need any paperwork it would have to be both in Korean and English...

PLEASE LET ME REPEAT AGAIN....
the original may have been lost in the clutter.

You will need a NOTARIZED letter signed by the parents (with an English translation included) giving you permission AND consent to transport the children and/or seek medical or other attention if/when required.

This is not a complex document (remember those permission slips when you took a field trip in school or went to a summer camp) BUT you DO need to have it. Different countries have different rules. The US and Canada are the worst for transportation of minors into and out of the country (primarily due to spousal kidnappings).

When we traveled with our SCOUTS for the international Jambouree we had to have this paper for each and every kid along with their passport.
It allows you to seek medical care, give consent for medical procedures, travel and general care.

The paperwork problems tend to arrise in the western countries rather than here in Korea. The airlines don't care as long as the children are accompanied by an adult.

I am taking the children to Canada. I have also discussed with the parents I will need a letter of consent signed, giving me permission to transport their kids.

I just thought I would need an official document from the government. I am bringing my korean gf and she will be soley responsible for them.. not me.. but we'll be with the kids 24/7 like family.

thanks

You were asking so I found a copy of a standard letter of consent that is usually considered acceptable.

I hope this board doesn't destroy the formatting too much.

Make sure you place a PHOTO (passport or full body style) of the child on the letter.
A fingerprint print set is also a good thing (but not required) to have.
