Well, I attended some kind of Korean school festival last week. I was requested to come in on Saturday morning for the event which coincided with a visit by the owner of what I had previously thought was a public high school. (When I inquired, I was told by the head of the English dept. that "about 50% of the high schools in Korea" were privately owned by non-profit foundations...) Anyway, it consisted mainly of sporting and recreational events, and it also highlighted teacher's day.
From what I gathered, the original "founder" of my technical high school had owned a large pharmaceutical company among other enterprises - including, I think, a hospital. His widow and executives of the foundation (based in Busan) all came by in the afternoon and appeared briefly on stage (the same stage from which I would later win the "karaoke"/norae competion...)
Somehow there were five teams, and we all wore different colored gym suits and hats (twenty thousand won would be deducted from my pay - reportedly the suit cost about fifty thousand won, the balence paid by the school...) Since the event took place on our school grounds (all the other teams were bused in..) we were designated the "A Team" (I guess I was like a white "Mr. T"...) There was a "pharmaceutical team", "medical team", etc,, and each team had its own cheerleader that led us through aerobic exercises and chants (not Hare Krishna...) The teams competed fiercely in soccer (several minor injuries) and volleyball and there were a lot of recreational games similar to horseshoes and golf - and, of course "bronco busting"... Here're some pics:
(finely tuned athletic machine...)
(a fitting end...)

The girl holding the camera has exactly - exactly - the same uniform as my students.
But then I guess about 1/3 of Korean high school girls do... |

We had a similar thing at the snobby private school that I teach at, except the city basketball stadium was booked for the event and the uniform, snazzy red shirt and bandana, were free for my non-employee wife and myself. |

Those aren't pants - they're just big floppy red sox (and by the grace of God they had "Red Sox" embroidered on their shirts...) I think they might be professional cheerleaders that were hired for the gig...
The standard school uniform at my (fairly low) tech high school has been that medium grey color, but they might be changing it - some of the freshmen girls today came in wearing uniforms with light-blue plaid skirts that were a little shorter and cooler looking. I don't think that you can really make out the complete uniform of the girl holding the camera - you can't see the necktie -
(It seems to me that there are two types of girl students at my school: those who cover their mouths and those who stick their tongues out ...) |

Ah, differnet ties. That's were my school gets to express its individuality. |

Here's a look at the new uniforms worn by freshmen at my school - note how they compare with the old grey one. I especially like their cerulean blue color ...

Interesting - my middle schoolers' summer uniforms consist of a brighter, blue plaid skirt and ribbon but my high schoolers get a dull grey skirt. Things really do get gloomier as one moves along in school here, it seems. |
