Me thinks that if you think them not figuring out the time zone difference is a problem.... perhaps you should stay home... you ain't ready to leave Kansas yet Dorothy

Ahh that takes me back to when I started doing phone....

....interviews.

"Hello, hello. Can you play guitar?"
"Can you come today?"
"Korea good place no?"
"How do you feel about teaching in clown hat?"
"We pay you. I promise!"
"All teachers like school very much. No need for you to ask, I'm telling you."
"Do you like kimchi?"
"Can you be blonder?"
"Yes.....mmmmm......aha....we promise."
"You ask many questions. Do you always ask many questions?"

Wait till you get here and are sleeping in your warm and comfy bed at 1AM and the phone rings.

Drunk Korean Friend: Hi. What are you doing?
Me: I was sleeping.
DKF: I hope you don't mind me calling. I've been out drinking with my seniors and am going home now. I was bored so I called. One of my girlfriends is with me. Talk to her.
Me: No thanks. I want to go back to sleep.
DKF: No problem. Just talk for a little while. She has never talked to a way-gookin before. She is shy.
Me: No thanks....
Shy Girlfriend: ......
Me: Hello?
SG: .....
Me: Yeobosayo?
SG: ....
Me: Yeobosayo?
SG: Yeobosayo?
Me: Well, wasn't that fun? Good night. (Hangs up.)

By the way, this is an entirely different phone call from the one at 1 AM from a drunk Korean friend who is at a bar and has just discovered he doesn't have the money to pay for his (and all his friends') drinks. This call includes a plea to pull on your clothes and come over and pay the bar bill.

Say this to them

"Greetings. You've reached Ghengis Kahn's Pornographic FilmsUnlimited. Fabian, Pat, Rex and Mike are still conducting screentests with potential leading ladies to star opposite the late JohnHolmes in our upcoming feature film "It's Not the Size That Counts butWhether or Not You're Alive to Use It." If you're interested in a screen test, or even if you're not, please leave us your name, age, phone number, measurements, cup size, a brief summary of your work experience, both off and on the screen, and a brief summary of your favorite fantasy involving four men, a pair of handcuffs, and a tub of Cool Whip. Thank you for calling."

When you are looking for a job badly enough, you may need to take a call at any hour of the day or night...although, a school should LET YOU KNOW, so you won't be sitting by the phone 24/7. Who can do that anyway? On the other hand, once you get to Korea, if you value your sleep, you can TURN OFF THE PHONE WHEN YOU GO TO BED!!!

While the school, or recruiter, should warn you what time the call will be at, you have to be prepared to take calls at almost anytime. As princess said, if you want a job badly enough. Most places are going to call during their business hours, granted they could make a better effort to check the time where you are, just because they don't do this, doesn't mean they are going to mess you around when you get here

My first inteview back in the early 90s included only the following:

1) Do you have your diploma?
2) When can you leave for Korea?
3) How tall are you?
4) Are you fat?
5) Do you drink too much?
6) What color are you hair and eyes?
7) Do you go to a church, and are you too serious about it?

Classic. Everyone should know only one fact before coming to Korea to work for an institute: You are a facilitator, not an educator. You are here to look the part and provide a novelty. The books are there, and lessons take very little effort to prepare. Don't plan on taking it too seriously, no matter what they tell you once you get here. Show up, have a good time, and dress the part.

I think it is perfectly ok to be annoyed with a 1:30 am phone call. When I was appplying for work here, I didnt bother with any company that couldnt figure out that they were calling me at an inappropriate hour. I think it is a good indication of what other inconsiderations are waiting for you at that place of employment once you get here.

Granted you are often dealing with a recruiter, but I dont want to deal with a recruiter that would call me at that time of the morning either. There are plenty of jobs out there and if you have experiece (even if it's not in Korea) you can afford to be picky.

Princess, didn't you say on another thread that you only gave a small time-window for calls?

So what do they want to hear, that you do indeed drink, or no? Wink
