My coworkers were all taking about it today. The leader of the main opposition party and daughter of assassinated president Park Chung-Hee, Park Geun-hye was cut with a box cutter on Saturday in Sinchon at a campaign rally. This woman will most likely be a candidate for the next presidential election and could possible be the next president of the country.

Park Geun-hye, of the Grand National Party (GNP), was assaulted with a box cutter at a campaign rally on Saturday.

She is recovering from hospital after receiving an 11cm (four inch) gash to her cheek.

My thoughts exactly.

As much as some of the posters on here will undoubtedly admire her party's pro-American platform, you also have to wonder about the party's stance on democracy, considering its history. I was hoping Korean politics had advanced enough that it was above that sort of politics. I was also kinda hoping it had simultaneously gone past the point where political power was dictated by violent acts.

The would be assassin was an Uri party member. Gotta wonder about a party's stance on democracy when it has political assassins in its midst.

As head of the KCIA, I would imagine the same party.

One article said the guy has been jailed 8 times. I don't think we are dealing with a paragon of civic virtue here.

Who knows how the current pro-NK "yeolin oori dan" will try to slant that in the future. I know they're claiming now that it was just some guy trying to assassinate Park Chun Hee instead of a North Korean, when his wife was killed.

I always thought it was funny how No Moo Hyun tries to portray himself as an outsider to politics and acts almost naive. But in the process he's eliminated almost all of the provincial governers and mayors that were his biggest rivals. It's funny how they all either committed suicide in prison or jumped off the Banpo Daegyo. Also he brought up some charges against the Deputy Combined Forces Commander, General Shin and had him arrested. He was a good guy, West Point Graduate too. Now if No Moo Hyun isn't ingenious???? And now scaring Park Keun Hye....

Alex,

my man, you hit the nail on the head. Dont forget abut the current president's attempts to destroy conservative press that is critical of him. The Uri party is a thinly veiled communist party. Something Ive touched on in other threads. They are the biggest danger to Korean sovereignty, security and democracy. As far as the attempt on the life of Park Geun Hye, there will be an attempt to cover up who is responsible for this. The facts are though that he was an uri party member. A party with political assassins isnt a democratic one. Roh is the worst president the ROK has had in a LONG time, perhaps ever.

The silver lining to all of this is that the GNP is about to pretty much sweep the May 31st elections and hopefully keep thie momentum going until the NA and presidential elections come around. There is a strong conservative wind blowing here because people are quite rightly fed up with the incompetence, corruption and lack of backbone (or rather the deliberate undermining of ROK's security and sovereignty vis a vis NK) when it comes to dealing with North Korea. Apart from the lunatic fringe on the left, people are NOT in favor of unconditional support of NK, unconditional ass kissing of KJI. They want a president and government that will actually have a backbone and a voice and not bend over everytime NK demands it.

I am not a Roh supporter yet where is your proof that he had his rivals eliminated? Governors are elected officials and cannot be just fired by the president.

There are some pretty strong claims here. My first guess is that some of you don't actually know what communism is, or how it's different from liberalism. Not pledging your life to to murdering your neighbours doesn't make you communist.

Really, what's the worst thing that has happened during Roh Moo-hyun's time in office? What's the worst thing that happened during Park Junghee's? Or Chun Doo-hwan's? Or Rhee Seungman's? Korea has gone from a strong, insane, corrupt government kept in power by military might, to a weak, kind of incompetent, corrupt government kept in power by partisan politics. I'll stick with the government that can't make me disappear.

Yeah, perhaps - for the sake of argument...; but doesn't a weak South Korean government at this critical juncture make it more likely that a strong communist regime will emerge when - and if - Korea re-unites?

No officially atheistic government has - or ever will - make their people happy or prosperous...

Heres my understanding of it. When you turn a blind eye to every goddamn thing the North does, be it kidnappings, be it drug smuggling, be it counterfeiting, be it human righst abuses, be it the nuclear issue, etc and you NEVER EVER challenge them or even criticize them for anything, thats atleast some form of a nod of approval, dont you think? Whats worse is the the former minister of reunification and leader of the Uri Dung has expressed some fun ideas: how about slashing the South's forces to 300,000 while helping the north build airbases. The first proposal hasnt happened and thank God, but the second has. Seoul gave the DPRK money to build AIRBASES. Now, if the North was an ally, then I wouldnt see a problem. However the DPRK is an enemy with 1.1 million armed soldiers and lots of missiles pointed at the ROK. Do you want to be funding the building of military infrastructure in a country hell bent on claiming your territory?

Nothing bad has happened? Well, how about the fact that the ROK-US allience is at its lowest point EVER? How about the government approving and even FUELLING the fires of anti americanism while defending the DPRK, a CRIMINAL REGIME at the cost of an allience with the only real ally the ROK has or has ever had? How about the government FUNDING dangerously criminal and terrorist leftis gropus, ones that are running amock in Pyeongtaek attacking the police and army? This is NOTHING according to you? The Roh administration has been a DISASTER from start to finish.
