First up, folks, is Tasters' Choice coffee - that crappy instant coffee stuff. i drink it at work and when ever i knock back a coupla cups, i feel fat, loosening my belt. what the hell?
how calorific is K-food in general - the rice? the sauces? the dwen-jang soups? the crappy coffee? i'm too cheap to buy proper coffee and too lazy to make it even if i did buy it. |

I've had some like with finding nutritional information on Korean food at www.recipezaar.com. Just type the best romanization you can into their search feature and there's a good chance you'll find a recipe and nutritional information for it for a lot of foods, including a lot of Korean foods. And it's in ENglish.
Obviously, this is going to vary depending on how it's made, so it's only really a rough guide.
A few examples:
Quote: |
kimchi bokkumbap (320g) - 379 calories
sundubu chigae (333g) - 299 calories
bulgogi (90g) - 113 calories
bulgogi (206g) - 510 calories (according to a completely different recipe)
maeuntang (196g) - 130 calories
samkyetang (440g) - 256 calories
bibimbap (586g) - 643 calories
kalbitang (105g) - 289 calories (78% from fat )
As for those instant coffees? I couldn't find any definite numbers, but those things are chock full of sugar and fat from the instant creamer in them, there's a reason you feel fat after you drink them.
If you want the caffeine without the calories, drink black coffee or tea. For coffee from coffee grounds, get a French press, it's easier to use and clean than a coffee machine.
If that's too much for you, drink tea out of teabags, no fuss no muss. |

Korean food in general isn't too bad. If you find yourself bloating up a bit, cut down on some of the rice portions. I swap my rice for salad with a lot of meals and it seems to really help.
...the beer doesn't help things either, but that's a bit more tricky to cut out
Also, black coffee is the way to go calorie wise. Pick up a french press (bodum) and brew your own, you can experiment with different regions and roasts and find something you like. If you're not used to black coffee it can be a bit of an acquired taste, but once you get used to it you'll discover a lot of subtle flavours in coffee that are usually drowned out by the sugar and milk. |

One cup of rice is about 200 calories. I remember checking out the nutrition poster in my school's cafeteria last year. All I remember is that one roll of kimbap has some shockingly high number of calories. |

I have seen a pretty good carb list for Korean foods, a friend got it from her doctor when she was diagnised with gestational diabetes. Ask your doctor or your trainer at the gym. |

I am correct in translating, 1대접시, as "1 dish"? (My dictionary's at home--I hate it when I don't know easy stuff.)
That's a bloody useful site as the English ones I've seen list the nutrition details in units that aren't very practical for trying to figure out how much is on your plate down the local 식당. |

That, does indeed make sense.
Now, am I eating off of big plates or normal plates...? Bastards are just trying to be confusing, I think. It's a conspiracy to keep me out of shape. Yeah, that's it. |

Nothing wrong with counting calories, I guess... Or maybe there is. Maybe when people start looking at every food as a little monster on a plate, getting this wound up about how much "bad" it's going to do them, then they're already hopelessly lost in the numbers, in the dieter's mindset, in the endless cycle of trying to lose weight, then gain it back, then fretting, then trying to lose it again, and then...
J(apanese)-gals and F(rench)-gals and K(orean)-gals aren't calorie-counters, and they aren't exactly the flabbiest people on the planet. |

Can't take credit for finding it, but I'm glad to pass it along. And I agree with the other posters...the thing that makes it great is that the 'servings' are typical Korean servings. I find "one bowl of rice" much more helpful than "250 grams", or whatever the hell it may be! |
