| OMG, I'm laughing so hysterically from the post I can't even write an honest reply. From what I've seen...hang out at the outback Steakhouse in Itaewon. It's not overweight people that I'm laughing at, it's the fact that man....you are going to be sooo surprised and in shock when you come to korea. Yeah, there are bigger koreans like North Americans. I think you have bigger things to worry about, not whether you can find your ideal 160lb woman... |

Well, most of my other concerns are already addressed by numerous posts. Glad my post provided some amusement for you. |

Also go to most gyms and you won't find many women doing any kind of weight training. Maybe a little cardio but it's a rare thing to see women lifting any kind of weight at all. I've even been told not to use the weights because I'm a women by several well-meaning (not) adjeoshis.
Of course the resistance to this is fear of bulking up (which it's hard for women to do anyway) and that they'll end up weighing more due to more muscle. |
True. Muscle weighs more than fat, which explains why two people can wear the same size even though one weighs more. I can wear waist size 24 and so could my Korean coworker last year. But, when we took the kids to camp, she said my body is beautiful so I should put on my swimsuit and swim with the kids. She said she wouldn't because she is too skinny. BUT WE WEAR THE SAME SIZE!!! So, I am skinny too. |

NO MUSCLE DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN FAT!!!!! Muscle is simply denser than fat. Fat takes up more room than muscle. A pound of fat takes up more room than a pound of muscle.
Sorry but this is a pet peeve of mine. 1 pound is 1 pound. But on your body if you have lots of muscle you are going to look leaner than a person carrying alot of fat. You can weight exactly the same or even more but if you are fit and have good muscle tone you are going to be smaller.
That said...K-women come in all shapes and sizes. Generally they are a smaller and slimmer. Many are quite stunning. The one thing I hate is the obession with being thin. I go to the gym every day. The women toil away on the treads and such and hardly ever go near the weights or even the weight machines.
I love being strong. I like nice defined muscles. I am not talking Bev Francis here just good muscle tone. I am not perfect body type by a long shot but I am also not drinking laxative drinks and nearly fall over if I have to walk up a flight of stairs. In the sauna I do notice that the women don't tend to be very toned. Slim yes, good muscle tone no.
I hate that my little girl students are now freaking about being fat. Many refuse to eat lunch and many are already carrying the laxative drinks around with them. After lunch the purging begins starting in the teachers bathroom. Not all but enough to where it doesn't surprise me. How do I know....Used to be one of them. Eating disorders suck and the sad part is it screws with your metabolism and your life is one constant battle with your weight and health. I wish I could tell them but alot of them think they have found the magic pill....puke....take chinese laxative crap. Only makes it worse later in life.
Best answer? Exercise be healthy and quit worrying about HOW YOU LOOK AND WORRY ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL. Fashion is fickle health isn't.
Lecture now over.

This statement doesn't explain why the following statement is wrong.

What's the basic assumption when they say muscle weighs more than fat? Yes, the same volume. Your explanation exactly explains how princess is correct in fact. Sorry it's trivial but I just couldn't resist... |

Okay if you have one pound of fat on a scale and one pould of lean muscle on a scale they will BOTH WEIGH THE SAME. 1 pound. Fat however for lack of a better word is fluffy.
A pound of lead and a pound of feathers weigh exactly the same --- 1 pound but a pound of feathers takes up more space. There is no difference in the weight only the amount of space they take up.
A pound is a pound is a pound whether it is feathers, chocolate or water.
The weight is still a pound. How much space they take up is the difference.

The assumption in the statement "muscle weighs more than fat" is you're talking equal volumes. One cubic meter of muscle, being denser, would weigh more than one cubic meter of fat. Everyone FULLY understands the assumption behind the statement. 'cept you.
What novel point are you trying to make? |

volume is different than weight. We were taught that early on in Math. Guess you missed that day. what was said was that muscle weighs more than fat. In volume yes. In true weight no.
I know the difference between volume and weight. Again. 1 pound is still just one pound. Fat or muscle. However if you throw volume in then that is a different equation.

By this logic, lead does not weigh more than feathers, if you don't take volume into consideration. |

Thing is we know this. We're saying if you have 10 pounds of fat around your waist, it's going to take up more volume (hence you'll need bigger pants) than 10 pounds of muscle around your waist. No one at all is saying a pound of fat weighs less than a pound of muscle.
A 180 lbs person made up of fat is a bigger person than a 180 lbs person made of muscle. We're all clear on that.
If this is your big chance to appear pedantic, you're only providing a lot of unintentional comedy for the rest of us. |

Ho hum...the K-teachers had another 15 minute conversation today about how they all are dying to lose 2 kilos, and whether or not they should be eating more rice, or less rice and more bread, or less bread and more salad-uh...It was quite riveting, really, or might have been if they hadn't had that exact same conversation yesterday, and are probably going to have the exact same one tomorrow... |
