ditto. Hated those things. Although it was pretty cool to roll it up and stuff it in a wardrobe and sit on cushions on the floor on those cold winter days. (But the nights! My back!) |
What would usually happen with me is, I'd get a few nights of restful slumber, but then it would get progressively more painful. So I'd throw a second yo under me and fluff them up again. Sleep well for a few nights, and then sure enough, I'd begin to feel that hard floor slowly cut into me through the double yo.
If I could sleep on my back or my stomach, I think I could manage. But without intending to, I always seem to end up sleeping on my side. And that's when you really feel the pain of the floor cutting into your hip-bone and ribcage. I wonder if yos are as painful for fat people. Probably not. I had slept on futons before, but those are soooooo nice and soooooo wonderful and soooooo Japanese. The yo, on the other hand, is an instrument of slow torture. Very Korean, the yo.
The practical benefits are cost savings, space savings and portability. Many people also claim that a yo is more comfortable and even healthier than sleeping on a bed -- not just for them, but for all humankind. And with some foreigners in Korea, it goes well beyond issues of practicality or comfort or health, and enters the realm of self-image and political self-styling. Sleeping on a yo for these foreigners becomes part of their lefty lifestyle & geopolitical world outlook:
"Hey, lookit me! I've gone native, I'm more flexible, I'm more tolerant of other cultures than you! See? I even sleep on a yo! 'Cos that's just the kind of muesli-munching, third world-hugging, bleeding-heart liberal I am!"
Yes, the international vagabond brigade, the jet-set hobos, the patchouli & bandana-dog crowd. Sleeping on a yo is just another facet of the whole sandal-wearin', incense-burnin', light-travelin', non-consumerist shtick. I happen to admire that shtick to a degree, but I just can't get with the yo. Even though I slept on one for years.

| I've got a Murphy Bed, but my place is big enough that I don't have to put it up at all, unless I'm having a dinner party. I also have an extremely comfortable futon that I crash on some nights. |

What a nice excuse to post this up -
Reedtea & I just bought a new bed(an honest, standard/Eastern King), as well as a sofa bed(queen). In about 10 more days, we have a sectional sofa coming the converts to a bed (queen as well).
(if that sounds strange, we host people over at our place quite a bit - post party crashes, friends visiting, etc.)
These 3 purchases are GOLDEN, for 2 very good reasons:
1) - they are IKEA, which means NORMAL sizing, and COMFY mattresses!!!
2) - they were CHEAP - even though they were shipped in via China, still 1/3 of the cost of EVERY Korean bed we looked at - basically, the same as a US military base price.
Delivery was free, but since it is IKEA, you have to set the stuff up yourself.
If anyone wants info, there is a place in Ilsan, and another in Anyang; they have a website that can be navigated, AND - best of all! - the owner/manager SPEAKS ENGLISH!!!
Regards,
~G~ |

| Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a "yo?" I am picturing some kind of thin mat, like those mats they give little kids to nap on in preschool. Is this what it is like? Or are they more substantial? |

obviously, the more Korean you know, the better/easier.
Everything comes from the China IKEA locations; besides what is on the website there, he can get about anything from the Chinese IKEA catalogs. Prices aren't over the top; shipping/delivery is free. Deliveries are about every 2 weeks. Feel free to ask anything else you want.
The manager/owner is Mr. Sun-june Park (Bak Sun-joon); he lived/worked in Sweden for awhile, and is English really is quite good.
(he is at the one in Anyang; I don't know about the one in Ilsan)
Anything else, just ask. We got the Malm King bed, with the best matress & pad available, and then ordered matching bedside tables from the catalog.
(sleep has been BLISSFUL this past week!!!)
The couches were the Beddinge Klassisk (the sofa bed), and the Mysinge Corner sofa, which also converts to a bed.
We are using the sleeper in the computer room as a couch/guest room bed; it is darned comfy, and we watch movies in there sometimes, with the whole thing out & a few cushions/pillows.

A proper bed, though I wouldn't be opposed to sleeping on the mattress on the floor--though it does strike me as trailer-trash from time to time. |

Well, no, Bul, not quite -
The guy technically runs an import business that specializes only in IKEA. They have a redistribution agreement with 2 of the Chinese IKEA stores.
So, you can see a fair bit of stuff on their website. And if you visit the 'stores' (which are really just warehouse slots) you can browse what they have on hand (but it is NOT a showroom setup!) as well as meet the owner & pick up copies of the Chinese catalogs.
He offers a 5% cash discount as well; we just wired the money bank-to-bank, & still got the DC.
That means a working knowledge of Chinese, or doing the browser dance between the Chinese sites & the English sites.
A little homework? Yes. Well worth the price of admission, tho . . .

G. |

I love the idea of a yo, but at this age my back just can't stand it. Still use one at friends' houses, in the winter, and for weekend catnaps. (Don't ask me why, but even when I have a bed nothing beats spending Sunday afternoon lying in the sunbeam on the livingroom floor!)
Too bad you can only choose one answer in a poll, because my best answer would be "bed + pile of dirty [or clean] laundry."
