I'm looking for somewhere to build a personal website. I don't need a place that's so busy like myspace. Or to link with many other "friends". Just a basic and functional yet still stylish place to put up personal info. / photos / stories and maybe a blog.

I've used several websites in the past but they quickly became defunct and outofdate. Created by someone else for business and not easy for a non techie like myself to update.

Does anyone have any advice regarding the best place to build this????? I don't mind paying a smallish annual fee either.

Thx in advance.

DD

MSN Has a Community message board you can build into a database.

If you want to go whole hog with your own website, byus.net gives you personal webspace for 10,000 a year. Your url would be ddeubel.byus.net. You would need to learn about web design a little, but there's no popups or anything and the price is right.

I use Xanga because it's kind of a "what you see is what you get" program. Of course you can do HTML on it, but I don't know how to do that.

It's free, and you get a 30-day sample of their "premium."

The only bad thing, as far as I can tell, is it only displays the 5 most recent posts. So your friends cant' sit and scroll down your whole experience in Korea . . . they have to keep clicking "next 5."

I hear blogspot is good, and actually I liked using Geocities, too.

I am leaning towards typepad...........I've tried MSN before and didn't like it.

Is typepad easy to use???? Can you create multiple pages for different topics and photos??? I might find the answers myself today but thought I'd ask for a bit more pluses and minuses about it.....

thanks to all who replied.

I purchased my own site for $15 a year. I chose the non-banner stuff (their banners are gross). This is another $10 a year. click on my link below in my signature and you'll see. I have 3 sites from them:

Professional Site = http://www.ralphsesljunction.com
Family Site (still working on it) = http://www.thesabiofamily.com
My goof-off site I haven't touched in months: http://www.ralphsabio.com

All purchased from Directnic.com

You will need to know how to use an FTP client and be able to make your own site.

http://www.blogger.com/ works good for me. No knowledge of html necessary (although it helps a little bit).

I agree. I use it. I know nothing about html. I intend to learn, but I have a decent looking blog w/out it. Monthly archives are a click away (on the side for most formats). I use photobucket to link my pictures. It is very easy to get started if you want, while looking into paid sites w/ additional features. You can link to other blogs and manage more than one of your own, or share admin with others.

I have not used typepad. I used blogger because it was so easy to get started when I decided I wanted to.

I don't care for some of the templates on blogger, but some are pretty stylish, and I get compliments on mine. BTW, DD, I think your avatar is great.

Thanks for the info. I set up an account a few months ago on blogger because so many runners also use it. Easy, you bet. But I don't like that it has no photo storage or also that all the sites seem to look quite similiar. but yeah, the price is right. Still think I will go with typepad.

Glad you like the avatar. I wish I was as quick as him but luckily, I am almost as happy! He's my hero.
