If you have fallen behind in your student loan payments and were a non-resident on March 31, 2006 contact the IRD.

The government is giving all non-residents an amnesty on penality interest for non-payment of your student loan.

Details are here

Yes, its great isn't it!! I've already applied for it and am waiting to hear back. The amnesty is only for one year so its best to get onto it now. And its back paying all of the penalty charges too which means mine will probably be paid off. Yahoo!!

Don't forget to pass it along to other Kiwis. They aren't publizing it much. I clicked on an advertisement for the ID by mistake and saw it as a side link.

Are you sure? The IRD told me that it would only be for current payments.

Yep I'm sure. They called me today to finalise everything. They will backpay your penalty charges up until your application is received. I got a nice chunk off my loan, so its definately worth applying for it.
