The other thread sounded like a good idea, but I'm down in Daegu.

Any other dog owners in Daegu interested in something similar?

Lame and predictable for sure, but no need to reprimand them. Some peeps are just easily amused.

The eating dog "joke" is really old and much too predictable.

Normally, I agree with this, and it's my primary beef with Jay Leno - I don't think he's ever mentioned Korea except in reference to chowing down on a pooch. I laughed today because of the surprise factor : a guy wants to organize a picnic with dogs and well ...

Actually, it's nice idea, and we should apologize for hijacking it.

I believe this is the second Doggy Picnic thread to date. There's another, earlier thread started by the (Seoul Chapter?) Doggy Picnickers as well. In that other thread, Kermo expresses surprise that no-one had yet (at that point) made the 'inevitable joke', and I honestly didn't know what she meant. I've been in Korea long enough that the gaegogi tie-in should have jumped right off the screen and bit me. But it didn't.

'What "inevitable joke" is she talking about?' All I could think was, she expected a rude male poster to suggest that the female pet-owners were probably ugly, and that any picnic they'd arrange would by definition be a "doggy picnic"... Confused Seemed a real stretch. Seemed real cruel, too. But if the dogmeat idea doesn't occur to you, what else might that 'inevitable joke' be?

It's counter-logical, but maybe the newer one is to Korea, the more likely and immediate that joke will occur to them. Or is it not a newbie vs. old-timer thing, but rather the media exposure that dog-eating receives these days? Of course I was _aware_ that Koreans did eat dogs before I got here, but that's because I lived in Asia already and found out a bit more on my own when I knew I'd be coming here. Today though, all Westerners, even those with little interest in Korea and zero desire to come here, know about the dog-eating. To the extent that it's become almost synonymous with the country. (Me: Name three dog-eating countries. World: South Korea and... oh, we give up.)

On a serious note, am I the only poster who saw the thread title and thought...

If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today
You'd better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Every Teddy Bear who's been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There's lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
'Cause that's the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for Teddy Bears
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.
