a cell phone? I don't want to obligate myself to a contract. I would prefer a pre-paid. Also, are you able to use a North American pre-paid phone if you acquire a new SIM card in Korea?

How long are you going to be here?

Cell phone contracts here aren't the soul-binding, 2-year, all-or-nothing BS you get back in the states. I'm not sure how it is in Canada.

Prepaid is a pain in the a$$, and you always seem to run out of minutes when you need them the most, not to mention it's about twice as expensive per minute as a contract phone.

If you negotiate a good deal, you'll be very happy with a contracted phone. There are a few standard deals you can choose from, I'm sure you can find one that suits you.

I have initially signed a one year contract, but very well could stay longer given the right opportunity. What is neccessary to sign up for a contracted plan?

Yeah, but the rates are cheap as dirt, and the contracts are flexible. That more than makes up for it over the course of a year.

There were lots of questions in this thread and I will try to remember all of them.

There are no contracts here like there are in NA. If you get a monthyly plan, you may have to keep it for 3 months (if you have delayed your setup fee or bought the phone on installments).

The phone system here uses a DIFFERENT technology (CDMA) system than NA so your phone from home WON"T work. It is NOT a matter of unlocking it or changing the SIM.

There are sticky threads about phones so feel free to read them. I know they have all the answers about buying and using a phone in Korea.
