Tired of the same Hollywood tripe showing at your local cine-shoebox?
Sick of the endless barrage of Van Damme and Segal films on OCN?
NOW is the time to fire up your synapses, and check out some
REAL FILMS!
Seoul Secret Cinema is a new project dedictated to bringing together
like minded film freaks, in Korea. We intend to share a wide range of
eclectic films with the public, running the gamut from 60's film
trailers to Cronenburg to Sergio Leone. There's nothing too bizare, or
eye opening that we won't show, but we need your help!
1. We're basically trying to gauge public reaction to find out your
opinion of screening arthouse films in Seoul. Please post your
thoughts, positive or negative. We want to get this off the ground,
and only you can help us decide. We also need your opinions on
great films to show, so please let us know what you're into!
2. This is a NON PROFIT project. The first screenings will be very basic
with a 32 inch flatscreen, and DVD - 5.1 Sound. We're starting out
small, but HELL, we're AMBITIOUS! As we evolve, so will the
screening space, and equipment. If you can help, or know of
someone who could volenteer a decent sized screen space, please
let us know.
3. If you know anyone who's a film fantatic, and would enjoy attending
screenings, or would like to be involved with SSC, please pass the
word. We will soon be holding a meeting/gathering of the SSC to
discuss film, and our first screening.
4. We're not only about screening films, but also about attending local
film festivals, and shooting films as well. If anyone shoots their own
stock, we'd be happy to show it!
Basically the primary impetus for us to kickstart this project is to share cool films with other folks and trying to bring together like minds who can think outside of the box in terms of appreciating cinema. We're tired of people pissing and moaning about how screwed up things are in Korea, and have decided to try and do something about it in a small way.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and we hope that there's alot of you that can attend, and help the Seoul Secret Cinema evolve as a fun part of the expat community. More information will be posted soon. |

Would you consider showing European films too?
Like La Vita E Bella, Todo Sobre Mi Madre and Central Station?
If so, I am in.

I'd like to get in on this.
I went to the "Seoul Art Theater" a few weeks ago but they don't really seem to get what that means. Or perhaps it was just the films what they were showing when I went that weren't good.
I say the first thing people should do is pool funds a buy an lcd projector. You could probably get a cheap one off auction for about 600k won or so. I suppose that would depend on how many people would be interested in doing this but if there was 12 people to chip in 50k there you go.
Actually I just found some projectors on auction for 200k so money really wouldn't be a problem.
Watching films on a big screen really makes the whole experiance. |

You've got my attention, though Seoul ain't just up the street for me. If you do it on weekends, you can safely count me in.
And I'd like to second that previous comment about the projector: a friend bought one here in Korea for his dinky little apartment and it's great. He paid 1.5 mil, if my memory serves, which is beyond a startup non-profit film club's budget, but if they are out there for 200,000, that would definitely be something to look into in time.
Though tate, don't write off the Seoul Art Cinema by the giant posters they display on the building; they alway seem to have interesting little theme programs going on there, films from all over the world, in all kinds of languages, and surprising number of them do actually have English subtitles. Last year I saw a Korean documentary there, fully-subtitled, called "The Six-Day Battle at Myeongdong Cathedral," about a large protest against corrupt government in the eighties that moved onto that big Myeongdong cathedral hill and stayed there for, well, six days. It was a solid documentary with interviews of a variety of the participants, a lot of photos and video of Seoul circa. 1986 (I believe it was), and some clips of CBS news reporting on the whole deal. I'd go there a hell of a lot more if I lived up in the city proper. |
