I'm wondering, if I sign a contract for a public elementary school in Gyeonggi-do, should I get something for my plane ticket although I'm already in Korea?

I'd like to know from people who've actually been through a similar situation, rather than those who think it has to be this way or should be this way, or those who think "don't sign if they don't pay".

Advice can be nice, but in this case I'd rather stick to facts.

If you are already here....

You will NOT be paid or reimbursed for your trip from home to Korea unless you were brought by them.

If you were here first and then landed the job: You WILL get re-imbursed (in my case it was 2 days after my return) for your AIRFARE ONLY when you make your visa run to Japan.

The cost of the hotel and visa during your visa run (by KPOE policy) are your responsibility.

You will get your airfare HOME when you finish your contract. If your contract is for a full calendar year you will get severance. If you are from Canada or the states you will get a Pension REFUND equal to 9% of your total salary when you leave Korea.

Been there, done that. Hope that answered your question.

If you have some problems you can always drop a line to David Nam at the Gyeonggi Provincial Education Office (policy division) [email protected].

I think its almost the same as SMOE, since the contracts that I have seen seem to be nearly identical. With SMOE at least, you get a plane ticket back to your home country, and if yo re-sign (sign again, not quit) you will get a ticket back to Korea.

It depends on the contract.... My contract gives me up to 1.5 to get home when I finish my contract.

If I submit the application materials before I go, am hired while I am home, will they pay for my airfare back? Do they really hire people from overseas or are they only hiring locals?

I'd like to teach in Pyeongtaek or Osan. Does anyone know a direct contact for either or these School Districts?

If you are hired from abroad they will reimburse you for your airfare to Korea AND pay for your flight home. Terms are in the contract. This means that you have your E2 BEFORE you get here. Yesm they really do hire from overseas but there are a few more hoops to jump through.

=======================================
If they need to send you on a VISA run, (you did not get your E2 before you came to Korea) you will NOT get paid for your airfare here (public school positions). You will get your visa run airfare reimbursed.
========================================

If you want Osan or Pyeongtaek then you will be under the GEPIK program.

It's a bit outdated but mostly accurate. You may be able to get current information from David Nam at the policy division of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education. [email protected]

That's not true. I know three public school teachers in Osan who did not go through either GEPIK or EPIK. Two went through the Wisconsin program and one was hired directly while working in a hagwon. And when I worked in an Osan middle school I also went through Wisconsin.

And I was a direct hire for my PUBLIC school as well... but we are still under the auspices of GEPIK.... cause the local school board still has to answer to the PROVINCIAL authority... they are NOT independant authorities.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

What if you don't want to go back to your home city after your public school job is over? Can you opt for a one way ticket to Europe, even though your 'home' is in America? Is it possible to get a flight allowance?

Sort it out with your school admin?

I'm staying on in Korea but I want them to give me cash instead of a ticket.If I get a ticket I'll just lose a big chunk for cancelling.I'll have to ask them soon.

It should be in your contract as to what you are eligible to claim. If not, verify with the school directly. Every school has different ideas about flight payments. Some schools don't pay for flights or visa runs at all.
