In 2 weeks I am moving to my new home in Jakarta. I have managed to build a nice computer while I was here, and doubt that I could do it there. How do I get my computer from point a to point B? Note, the post is not a choice as it was highly NOT reccomended by my local contact in Indonesia.

Do they make flight cases for desktops? Like they use for musical instruments and amplifiers and stuff.

On of those, or a very well packed and taped heavy cardboard box. Then just take it to the airport with you and check it in.

I know this sounds real dumb, but CAN you check in a cardboard box? If I can, then I will just heaby duty pack up a box with foam peanuts/clothes.

I've seen lots of cardboard boxes go into airport check-in counters.

Have you never seen Koreans check-in huge cardboard boxes of kimchi and rice cookers when they go on vacation?

I bought a small carry-on, semi-hard shell suitcase, the width and length a bit bigger than an ATX mainboard. I put the mainboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card and HDDs in there (anything 'delicate'), with ODDs, etc, stuffed into the middle of my check-in luggage.

I didn't bother taking the whole ATX case as it was pretty cheap and easily replaceable. Worked like a charm. Padded inside with socks and bits of formed cardboard...

I really don;t like/know how to take apart the computer, so I'll just pack it in a carboard box with lots of cushioning. Thanks guys.

Support inside is key. I wouldn't recommend shipping/moving a computer with the CPU cooler/fan still on the mainboard. Also, graphics cards should be well supported from all angles, if not removed.

I put my entire tower case in a semi hard shell suitcase (a large one I bought at Songtan for something like 35,000W), padded around with clothes etc. and checked it from Seoul to Vancouver - customs- Vancouver to Winnipeg, and then drove a few thousand kilometres of (at times) rough roads with it in the trunk.

It came out fine.

I did remove the power supply to reduce the weight, but if you have a nice one that you don't want to part with you could always put it in another bag... or if you're under the per bag weight limit and are not (as you say) good at removing things, then just leave it be.

I have been pondering this question for a while. I want to build a monster computer when I get to Korea and the thought of moving it when/if I leave is haunting me. I hate laptops. I must have a desktop and the way I figure it, the best way to get it back home is to take it apart. You can put delicate parts in a hard shell carry-on and the rest in your other luggage. If anyone has a better idea, please post it.
