Hi all,

I know this has been discussed before (notably here: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=39825&highlight=ecc+pukdaegu) and within that thread another one was referenced. That link doesn't lead anywhere but I sure would appreciate the info that was probably contained there.

I've been in contact with a Fred from Longbridge Pacific and I read on here that dealing with him is a terrible idea. I've also been in contact with Jin at the ECC Pukdaegu and I haven't seen anything particularly reassuring about her, either.

I've searched and searched on these forums, other forums, as well as Korean blacklists to try and find a consensus answer about ECC Pukdaegu and have come no closer to making a decision about whether or not to accept a position. Is there anyone out there who could further explain why working with Fred and Jin in particular is a bad idea? Has anyone worked at the ECC Pukdaegu school? Has anyone ever had a positive experience teaching in South Korea? Quite obviously, I'm new at this whole thing and I'll be placing a lot of trust in these people in Daegu. I just want to make sure that I do all of my homework before I start making plans to move around the world.

I've had a very positive experience over the past ten months teaching in Korea - by finding a job on my own through a school district.

What are they offering you? What evidence do you have that they're any different from so many of the other ECC horrors one reads about here and elsewhere?

They're offering the usual--airfare over and back, they'll take care of the visa, furnished apartment within walking distance of the school, and around 2 m won/month. (I haven't recieved a contract yet so that figure might change a bit.)

I don't have any evidence that they're different or that they're the same. That was really the reason I decided to post a topic here since I couldn't find any information elsewhere. I was hoping that someone out there could share their own experiences with this particular school if there were anyone out there who's had experiences with this particular school.

The whole debate over ECC seems split, though. For every person who posts about their negative experience, another posts that they had a fine time working with them. I read in another thread that there are differences between company-owned schools and franchise ones. Then someone else says that it doesn't matter, they're all terrible. I'm just really trying to ask a pointed question and hopefully there are others whose experiences could help me understand the situation as a whole.

The whole chain has a NOT GOOD reputation. Having said that, I don't know that particular school and I won't says bad things about them BUT I can give you some sound advice.

============================================
Get e-mail addresses of more than one current teacher. Talk / e-mail them when the boss is NOT there and they are free to be honest with you.
============================================

-Ask specific questions about shifts, start times, finish times, breaks, and pay issues. (a schedule of class, no class, class, no class, class just plain sucks). Lots of dead time that you can't do anything with. How do they calculate your "teaching hours"? How many CLASSES per month.
-OVERTIME, pension, and medical insurance are often issues of contention. Many hakwons fail to pay any of these.
- Ask about the housing - including quality of the apartment, management fees and utility costs. Your "free" apartment may cost you more than 150k won per month.

Feel free to ignore this advice... but you do so at your own peril.
Asking here is NOT the same as doing your homework and proper research.

There are TOO MANY hakwons in Korea and they often change names or owners when things get nasty. A year is a long time to spend in a crap hakwon 1/2 a world away from anything that you know and recognise.

CHECK FIRST HAND...... CHECK FIRST HAND.... CHECK FIRST HAND......

Good luck in your search.

++ edited in after the fact++
If they are unable or unwilling to give e-mail addresses of more than 1 current teacher - RUN, don't walk to the next offer.
ANY and EVERY reputable school will be willing to give you references.

I've dealt with Fred before twice. Once when my old school was looking for a teacher and he was a recruiter I was working with. And once again when I was looking for a school in Seoul. He helped me out, but I did most of the work each time because I knew what I wanted and he just helped put me in contact. I have heard that he was a bit of a jerk to one teacher he placed when she had a medical emergency and had to leave, but not sure of all the details.

The thing you have to remember with any recruiter is that once you get placed, their work is done. You are a commission to them, and that's about all. Use them to get the names of schools, then negotiate directly with the school.

Good luck in your search.

I thank you very much for your words of advice. I certainly realize posting a topic in a discussion forum is not the only area of research I need to be doing. Many people here seem to have awfully strong feelings about ECC and I wanted to know why.

Thanks again.

I agree with Tom, find out if they will let you talk to the teacher via phone or email. If it is by phone, make sure it's at a time when the teacher is alone (not being coached or watched by his/her boss). If the school says no, then decline the offer.

Right now there are plenty of jobs out there. If your not in a particular rush, take your time and decide. Don't hesitate to ask someone on here, that's what were here for.
